I noticed a pee smell in the bathroom last night, but couldn't figure
out where it was coming from; figured it was the litterbox.

Just now I noticed that Oscar had apparently peed on the paper towels
I'd put out around the litterbox.

Hrm.

During tomorrow's appt, I'll definitely ask them to do some UTI
testing.

Oscar may be just upset about the discruption of her routines. But it
is a good idea to have
it checked out.

Yeah, I agree on both counts.

In further news of our tragicomic week, I discovered that Oscar
managed to step in her own diarrhea with, naturally, her bad paw.  I
called the e. vet and was told to give her -- hahahahaha -- a bath.
With shampoo.  Not to use bactine, which would just make a mess.

Okay.  Well, I knew a bath wouldn't work.  I held her tight in the
bathtub, my belly to her back, and worked on the paw without being
able to see it with a wet washcloth and a drop of baby shampoo.

There was a lot of growling.  I did manage to get the worst of it off
before she inserted all claws in my breasts and leg and vaulted out of
the tub.  I'm ever so grateful for the e collar, which presumably
saved me from getting a fatal wound.

As for rinsing off the soap ... I'm not going there.  She'll just have
to have some baby shampoo on her paw.

Ouch! That must have hurt.
When I shampooed Rusty while he had ringworm, I was always afraid I
didn't rinse throughly enough and there were shampoo residue on him.
This is medicated shampoo, not intended for cats, but was told to use
by the vet. First the shampoo was to soak in the fur for a few minutes
before rinsing, which made a thorught rinse even harder. Plus his
pathetic crying. At least he never clawed or bite me.
I am sure thats how Rusty ended up with bald ears and thin fur on his
legs. He used to have thick furry legs. Now he legs look long and
skinny.  At least the fur is slowly growing back on his tummy.
There were also times I had to bath Rusty's behind after he came out
from the litter box.
There are cat wipes you can get. If one can use baby wipes to clean a
baby's bottom,
cat wipes should be fine for cleaning a cat.

True.  I should have thought of that.  Fortunately, my vet shaved
Oscar's fur near her butt Monday morning, so there hasn't really been
anything to worry about in that way.

Poor Rusty and you.  I hope his fur grows back thick and full.

I've actually wondered about this, Winnie. When I had Cherokee, he
needed a little "help" after he got old. Baby wipes would be very mild
to the skin, I agree. But babies don't lick their butts after being
cleaned. It made me wonder if what's in baby wipes would hurt a cat if
they ingested it. So I just kept either buying cat-wipes or using wet
"shop towels." They are just really thick paper towels.
Does anybody know anything about this?

I distinctly remember reading (maybe in h+b?) that baby wipes have
some ingredient that can be toxic to cats.  It's the prototypical
"just because it's safe for humans ..." example.

I have been having some problems with Cinders.  Apparently she
sometimes takes a pee with all four feet in the litterbox, but with
her rump close enough to the edge of the box that some of the urine
goes into the litterbox and some goes out onto the floor.  I haven't
figured out a good solution as yet, other than frequent
floor-cleanings.

How about using a hooded litter box? Rusty's pee clump is always at the
back corner of
his litter box, and sometimes the hood is wet too. You can always put
the litter box in a
long deep tray, or a long towel under the box.

I don't think this is what Oscar is doing.  If anything I think she is
avoiding the litterbox after having diarrhea in it (can't really blame
her there).

Maybe you can setup another litter box for her. I read some cats use
one box for purpose, and another for other purpose.

I did have two in the basement, and she used both interchangeably.
The second one is way too heavy and big to be carting around the
house.

She *has* peed in the litterbox while in the bedroom.  Just not all
the time.

I'm not going to worry about it too much, just get her checked at the
vet's.
