Today, Dennis went to the vet and visited with Vino again while I was at
work.  He stayed with him for 2 hours again.  Unfortunately, Vino's IV
had come out of the vein at some point during the night (nobody is there
24 hours, they have someone coming in every 4 hours at night) and so all
the fluids had gone into his tissues.  This made one side of his body
look like a stuffed sausage.
They assured Dennis that he would be alright and did some massaging to
get rid of the fluid build up.  But Vino is still throwing up some and
not eating much.  He is getting anti-nausea medication and they got him
to lick a bit of food off their finger.
I don't have to work tomorrow, so we are both going in first thing in
the morning and then again in the afternoon.  However, it's probably
unlikely that he will be able to go home tomorrow, probably Tuesday at
the earliest :-(
We miss our little buddy sooooo much and I am getting quite depressed
about the whole thing and have been having some pretty dark thoughts
about the possiblilty of him dying.
Please, please, please can I have everyone's strongest purrs for our
precious little boy?

I am telling Rusty to keep purring hard for Vino. You have to think
positive. Vino can and
will come out of this. He has been in good health till now. Rusty is
never in robust health, and he recovered from blockages more than once.
Vino probably pulled out
the IV himself, just like Rusty pulled out his catheter.

We haven't stopped the purrs.  Each morning I log on hoping to hear that
Vino is feeling better.  Never even seen the cat and I wake up worried about
him.  That is how sweet he is.

Oh god!  I can just imagine the horror, seeing your baby like that.
Poor kitty.

(It does kind of remind me of being in the hospital when I was in
college; I had some sort of unidentified intestinal bug.  I had an IV
drip to counteract my fluid loss, but it was so cooooold in my arm.
Every time I managed to get to sleep, a nurse would come by and wake
me up to fix the IV, which I'd apparently managed to cut off, which
was the only way I could get to sleep ... it was a long night.  They
wouldn't let me call my mom until it got closer to morning; I think I
called around 5:30am and she was there around 7:30, which is about as
fast as you could make the drive if you jumped in the car the second
the phone hung up.)

Is it possible he will eat more when you're nearby?  Oscar didn't eat
or use the litterbox the entire time she was at the emergency vet's;
just huddled in the corner, terrified.  I came in and gave her a
little treat; suddenly she noticed the dry food, chowed right through
it, then sat in the litterbox for a loooooong time doing her business.
It's like she didn't come alive till I got there.

Many, many purrs for Vino *and* gentle hugs for you.  I'm sure Vino
will make it; it's easy to worry, though.  When I went to work
Thursday morning, I had a vivid image of Oscar somehow getting her
collar caught on something and choking ... she didn't, of course, and
I'd spent a whole day with her to make sure the room was safe before I
went to work, but when we're worried our minds find ways to conjure up
the worst ...

*hug*

Mandy was a bit like this at the vet, too. OK, she'd broken her jaw, so
it must have hurt, but the staff couldn't persuade her to eat anything
even after the surgery when they'd expected her to eat. So they let her
go home, with a lot of worried instructions about making sure she ate,
and her digestive system got going again. I tried thinking of her most
tempting food, and gave her some squished up Vienna sausages. She
gobbled them up. I put out more vet-recommended food like pureed
chicken, she ate, no problem. I think she had been doing a deliberate
hunger strike in protest at being held at the vet clinic, because she
ate just fine once whe was back home.

Maybe Vino's appetite will return when he's back home again and feeling
better.

I had a similiar experience back in 1999, when I had a heart attack.
The technician put the IV in right at the inside bend of my elbow,
and, every time I would bend my arm, it would block the flow enough
that the pump would start beeping.  The pump was waking me up every 10
or 15 minutes.  I finally got a nurse to tape the tube to my forearm
so that I could shift positions without setting off the pump beeper.

Britta,

So sorry that Vino is having such a hard, icky time!  But cats have
recovered from worse.  Try to give him all the encouragement you can
when you visit tomorrow. Confidence that he will get well and
reassurance will mean a lot to him, even if he doesn't understand every
word you say.

The Girls are on Full Purr Patrol alert for Vino's sake, never fear.
And for Oscar's sake, too!

Oh gosh.  I'm sure he looks a bit down now, but he shouldn't die
because of his condition.  I hope and I'm sure that he'll recover soon.
He has both mom and dad, he has his new home.  He has too much to live
