He's totally off his food

Whatever was in those first antibiotics I gave Vino, they seem to have
made him really ill.  I got new antibiotics and got one dose into him
and he hasn't improved.  In fact, he's totally off his food now, won't
eat a thing.  Not ham, not kitty treats, not ground beef, nothing.  He
dry heaves about 3 times a day and spits up clear stomach fluid.  It's
getting worse and worse.
I've now got him in the bathroom and I'm going in every hour or so and
squirting a liquefied blend of canned food and water into his mouth with
a syringe.  I really think he needs to get some nourishment into him.
Meanwhile, I've just given up on the antibiotics.  At this point it
seems more necessary for him to eat something and feel better.  Besides,
the scab fell off his injury, it looks well healed.  I doubt there's an
abscess trapped underneath, it's on a bony part, right along his spine
and there's no swelling, no redness, nothing.  And it doesn't hurt him
if I press on it either.
Poor Vino.  I'm sure he could use some purrs for his tummy to improve.

Oh, that's really worrisome! Have you called the vet again? It sounds a
little worse than it was yesterday.

Purrs that Mr. Orange feels better soon!

Britta, it sure does. While fighting infection is very important,
Vino eating is more important first. Purrs for his tummy. Try some
baby food (plain turkey or chicken without anything else like
onions in it) on a spoon? I know Scarlett, and even Bonnie when she
was sick couldn't resist licking baby food off of a spoon even when
sick. When force-feeding I've even used a tongue depressor or
popsicle stick and sticking it in the mouth, kind of scraping the
food off of the teeth (hope I described that right!) to get them to
taste it to boost the appetite. Try heating the baby food to body
temp so it smells stronger than cold. What else have I done... a
little KMR for the calories mixed with heated cat food, NutriCal
(comes in a tube) either given by mouth or put on a paw so they
lick it off.  I do not know if these products (KMR or NutriCal) are
available in Aus.  Vet should be able to help.  Sometimes just some
fluids given IV or a steroid shot, a B12 shot, or an appetite
booster (a human antihistamine) are given to help with a kitty who
doesn't want to eat.

That really is a major concern.  Cats can become dehydrated very quickly,
and a cat that won't or can't eat is often a very sick cat (as I am sure you
already know).  I don't have a medical background, but I wonder if Vino
might need some Ringer's lactate after all he has been through.  I also had
a cat with similar problems where the vet had me get some Pedialite (not
easy to get the cat to accept), so you might want to ask your vet about both
of these things.  When I bought the Pedialite, the woman at the checkout
told me she hoped my baby would be alright!  Well, he really *was* my baby.

Rusty is sending purrs to a fellow orange cat down under. Rusty had
similar problems when he was on antibiotic. It was this past March that
the vet switched antibiotic because Rusty stopped eating. He also
spitted out clear fluid.  She said it is important to get Rusty to eat,
didn't matter what even though Rusty is on a prescription diet for
urinary problems. He actually had an urinary infection at the time. The
vet suggested I tried Hill's A/D with a syringe. Fortunately Rusty
started eating again on the secpmd antibiotic. She also told me
to give him Pepsid A/C to settle his stomach.
Another time when Rusty stopped eating while on a month long dose of
antibiotic for a
bladder infection, the vet changed the dosage slightly after stopping
the antibiotic for a day.
That was enough to get him eating again. I was very relieved.

You should talk to your vet before stopping the antibiotics.

Ohhh :( purrs for his tummy. Can you get Pepcid a/c there? 1/4 a tab
(2.5mg) is an ok dose for a kitty and it sure helps SUgar when she gets
like this.

Sending purrs his way.  We seem to be having issues on the group
lately with cats getting a bit derailed after being treated for what
looked like small simple wounds.
badwilson - 07 Jul 2006 04:44 GMT
Well, he puked up all the food I squirted into him.  He just can't keep
anything down.  I called the vet and she said that it sounds unrelated
to the antibiotics and to bring him in.  So I did.  She said his wound
is healed fine and not a worry anymore.  She palpitated his stomach and
said she could feel some kind of mass in there!  Eeeek!  It's either
something in his stomach or something on his kidney.  She said she
doubts it's a kidney tumour but still!
They are keeping him for xrays.  I'm so upset.  I wonder what it could
be?  I sure hope it's something that's easily fixed.
I have to drive to the next town (30 min away) to pick up Dennis.  They
have my cell phone number and will call me as soon as they know
anything.  I guess once I've got Dennis, we'll drop by and see what's
going on.
Purrs for my poor baby would be greatly appreciated!

Absolutely.  I know how upset you have to be.  And really glad Dennis is at
least on his way.  Vino should be in good hands.  A few extra purrs for
those hands.

And drive safe OK?

Oh no - here's hoping he just ate something dodgy or has a humungous
hairball and will be back to his royal orange self soon.

Oh man.  I would get him to a vet.  I just called the emergency vet
asking whether I should worry that Oscar had some diarrhea, and he
said no, but if she starts puking or seems ill to bring her in.

Oh no! I missed this thread somehow and just saw it this morning. I am
very worried about Vino now. This sounds too much like when Yoda got
HL. I sure don't want to scare you worse than you already are, Britta.
But you are absolutely wise to force-feed him to protect his liver.
Nutrical would be very good for him.
Please update. Lots of purrs coming for Vino.

Irulan - 07 Jul 2006 14:50 GMT
poor, sweet Vino. When Jazz was off his food also the first time he came
back from the UTIs blockage and treatment and he wouldn't eat the vet and I
thought it was more important for him to get something in his stomach than
for us to worry whether he pees right away again or not.

I did start forcing food/liquid down him like what you're doing, Britta,
with the help of a large syringe. The TED said as long as I got SOMETHING
down him, no matter how much it would prevent the liver damage that would
happen if he went without eating or drinking for days. He did recover after
a couple of days of being force-fed and had no adverse reactions.

I hope Vino recovers soon, we are constantly purring and praying for his
quick recovery.
