Purina ONE for Sensitive Stomachs

Enfilade - 06 Jul 2006 20:34 GMT I've been continuing to obsess that Kumani is eating only the bare minimum of C/D (it's hard to tell with four cats) so today, after feeding nothing but CD for 4 days (having used up all the T/D, which she seemed to like okay) I went to the store. I was going to get Iams Hairball but then I saw this--a brand developed for cats with sensitive tummies.
I opened it as soon as I got home and put down two bowls of it...and Kumani was right into one of the bowls as soon as it hit the floor. (Again, not sure if she was just curious for something new or if she really was hungry and avoiding the C/d). (Tyche, of course, was right into the other, which is why we really want to feed C/d--Tyche's fat, and ought to diet, but I'm afraid to try dieting her too much on account of Kumani really can't afford to lose any weight.)
So at least I'm not obsessing that Kumani is starving herself again (ie, when the vet tried to feed her canned food and she preferred 4 days without eating to even TRYING it--we finally got her eating on Iams Kitten Chow).
But I really don't want to be feeding out of two bags at once (for fear the other will go stale) and I don't know how good this ONE stuff is--it seems better than Whiskas or Meow Mix, but I don't know if it's as good as the Vet stuff.

Ah, the never ending "Am I doing the right thing for my cats by feeding this brand?" dilemma ...
Would Tyche eat wet? Oscar definitely lost weight on wet. Then again, it might be because she isn't a big fan and is holding out for dry ...
Signature monique, who spoils Oscar unmercifully

(Unless it's pate. Tyche won't eat pate. I try not to buy pate, since I don't want Smokey eating a whole can himself. We buy sliced, grilled, marinated, shredded or chunks in gravy.)
Nocturne and Kumani eat dry exclusively. Tyche and Smokey eat some dry to supplement their can of wet.

weirded out, because of our 2 wet-eaters, Smokey's losing weight and Tyche's gaining and of our two dry-eaters, Kumani is thin and Nocturne is gaining

Which was fine, up to a point, PC was one of the ones I was aiming that diet stuff at. When I blended it, they would all eat around the diet stuff, except Pine Cone who ate it all and stayed the same weight. Now I have them on Purina Indoor and, while they're all fluffy, none of them are seriously overweight. I've been thinking of putting them back on diet, but the ones who don't need to are the ones who'd lose weight.

Try Royal Canin Obesity - it's a new formula and *very* paletable (so Cleo Jelly Belly informs me ;o))
Also, for the sensitive tummy, try Royal Canin Sensible/Sensitive - it's brilliant and Robbie has had no IBD on it.
Purina ONE is similar in quality to IAMS.

Just like you said, it's a whole lot better than the other grocery-story brands, but I don't know how it stacks up against the vet stuff. My cats like Purine One pretty well. Their favorite is Pro Plan (also a Purina Product), but we have to go out of town to buy it. If I run out, Purina One gets them by.
I know what you mean about the dreaded stale bag of cat food. You might as well throw them away around here. No one will touch the bottom serving of a bag of cat food.

Persia is on prescription food, of course, but her Hill's x/d comes in a heavy duty plastic coated bag with a zip-lock top. I've never had a problem getting her to eat the very last bit of kibble from the bottom of the bag!

Pro Plan comes in a plastic 4-lb. jug with a snap lid. They still know when I"m giving them the dregs from the bottom of the jug. If I buy Purina One, I pour it into an old Plan jug. (Of course, I don't let them see me do this, LOL)

I freeze portions of the dry I buy for Bonnie and Rhett. I only leave out a 16 oz container at a time for Bonnies California Natural, and the container I store Rhett's SD Sensitive Stomache in is a bit larger because Shamrock and Scarlett like to nibble a little bit of his dry food, plus Rhett eats much more than Bonnie does. Bonnie eats some canned food, so her dry intake is limited. I have one of those FoodSaver vacuum sealer thingies, with a few canisters, so I vacuum seal most of Bonnie's food so it stays fresh. One 8 lb bag of her food lasts about 3 months, so all that time in the air would make it stale. She notices!

Sarrasine, of course, eats pretty much anything (and never puts any weight on!) but Redunzel's slightly fussier but she goes mad for the salmon and rice variety of ONE
