Pat - 06 Jul 2006 04:09 GMT Two weeks ago, my Lily presented me with her first ever hairball. She just now gave me her 2nd one.
In both instances, she did not warble prior to horking it up, which means, that awful noise is reserved for when her horking is due to nausea.
I can very much relate to that!
What I've learned from this is that cats don't really mind getting rid of hairballs via the mouth, but when they vomit for any other reason, they feel pretty rotten just beforehand.

I seem to recall some posts in the past indicating that really bad hairballs also make them feel pretty bad.
I've never noticed Oscar feeling bad at all before horking one up, but it's pretty rare and they're fairly small.

Maybe you are only finding them now because your cats are now indoors and they horked them up outside before. This is the only explanation I can think of as to why I have only ever seen *one* hairball here in all these years. They seems to be a feature of almost everyone's life here, but not mine. I haven't seen any outside but my two have a pretty large area to roam in so maybe they are depositing them in the fields at the bottom of the garden? KFC almost never goes out now, except for toilet duties, but still no hairballs in the house. Although, maybe as she doesn't groom herself much now that is to be expected! She had a thoroughly good groom the other day when my friend June came over. She held her firmly (with leather gloves on..) with a towel at the ready to cover her head if necessary and I managed to groom her *almost* all over down to the skin. That sorted out her matty thighs and she now looks much better, like she has a home and is not neglected. Under the tummy is out of the question but it seems smooth anyway. We decided to leave clipping her claws until another day as her language became vile and very abusive ;-) and she started to struggle to get away. She looks posh now!

Frank is very ceremonial about it. He waits until he's not only in the house, but usually after we go to bed, and sits on the cedar chest at the foot of the bed to hark up a hairball. Almost every time. I don't know what he's thinking. Maybe he thinks he might need some help, or maybe he just wants an audience, I don't know.

We used to think she maybe wanted us not to get cold feet but standing on a freshly puked hairball first thing in the morning and barefoot is not my idea of fun! She used to watch us do it and no-one can tell me she wasn't grinning at the time!

What is even less fun is what I did one time: I stepped in a fresh hairball while still half-asleep and had my foot slide out from under me. I ended up with a bruised knee from hitting the door frame on the way down, a bruised hip from hitting the floor, and a mix of cat hair and semi-digested cat food on both my sock and my pajama pants.

It was the middle of winter, and I dislike being awakened by cold feet. I don't wear socks in bed in warm weather.

No matter how hot it is, if I don't wear socks to bed I feel weird all night and can't sleep well. I think it has more to do with the pressure than the temperature, actually.
