Kumani's Devouring Plastic--help!

I don't think she's swallowed any but...

Today Kumani has just been a FIEND for chewing on plastic, and licking
if she can't chew.  Grabbing pens and chewing them.  Chewing the bags
in the garbage pails.  Licking CD covers and containers.  Gnawing a
mechanical pencil while I'm writing with it, even.

We've just switched to C/D from T/D (we usually alternate).  Kumani's
always eaten CD before...is she doing this plastic thing because she's
hungry?  Missing nutrients?

I found a hair ball on the rug today.  First time I've found a hair
ball with no barf.  Kumani is the one who barfs with hair balls in it
so I think it's hers...  Is she not eating, is that why there's no food
in the barf?

I'm trying to keep soft plastic out of reach, but it's not possible to
keep all plastic out of reach  when the garbage pails are MADE of
plastic and she can reach bookshelves with Video and CD cases on
them...I can't put everythign plastic out of her reach!

I saw her eat some C/D today, and so far it's stayed down...

I've heard of cats liking to lick plastic - it seems it's very common.  But
I've never heard of them eating it.  Are you sure she's eating it?  If she
ate some of her C/D today and hasn't barfed, I wouldn't worry about that.
Do you have a vet that's open to answering questions via telephone or email?

I don't know.  Maybe I will phone the vet tomorrow and see.

I don't see hunks of plastic bag missing.  IT seems she's just chewing.
I guess i"m worried that her chewing today seems far more than a
casual nibble, she's chewing all the plastic in sight, and I worry
about her since she's skinny, and she's the one who got sick in 2004
and didn't eat or drink for days.  We had to put her on IV.  She'll
also starve herself rather than eat canned food.

She's a healthy weight according to her last vet visit....body type 3
(ideal), like Smokey, whereas Nox is a 3.5 and Tyche is a solid 4 for
Fattie.  2 is underweight and 1 is emaciated, so we're a long way from
that for Kumani and Smokey but I still worry.

Phew, I just saw her eating more C/d!

who also worries about feeding C/D--is it calories enough for her?
Smokey's lost weight, and he doesn't need to (though he's still a 3
either).  Meanwhile, Nocturne and Tyche expand....

But

Both Fugazi and Isis used to eat plastic and usually expel a hairball
shortly afterwards. We gave them cat grass but they preferred to use a
carrier bag to clear themselves out

I've seen Redunzel chew on a carrier bag but she doesn't swallow it

Hrm.  Oscar sometimes chews on metal and hard plastic.  I decided not
to discourage her, because she tends to chew on large, obvious things,
and I decided that as long as she's not eating the stuff, it's
probably better to know what she's gnoshing on.  She also likes to
chew on candy wrappers and bits of that kind of plastic; as far as I
know, she's never eaten any, but I try to keep anything like that out
of her reach, and take it away as soon as I find it.

Reminds me of the current Get Fuzzy arc:
