Ok the vet has told me that it is best to limit Rumble to one brand of food
since changing his food around can of course change his sugar level.  Rumble
is a finicky cat real finicky when it comes to his food.  I am going to
change him to one brand of course  which is the best one to do it with the
most variety of choice.  He loves gravy but is not keen on 9 lives except
the tuna with real egg.  He eats the Whiskas packets with no problem but
tires of them real easy

To be honest we have never worried about the brand names except the
cheap version,  Never had a cat in all the years since my young age ever had
a problem all lives to a ripe age except for a couple that had genetic
defects they still lived to 8 to 15 all he others have levers 15+ years.  So
brand names have never been something we paid attention to (so no flaming
you don't live in this house you weren't ever here to see anything)

What brand name has the best choice for wet food specially one with gravy in
it.  They only free feed on dry food varieties fancy feast, Purina and 9
lives which Rumble barely pays attention to.  He loves temptations treats
specially seafood medley

Thanks in advance
Matthew

<waveswaves> Hey Karen, I'm doing my first home curve today on Hobbes. Your
posts to Matthew finally got through to me. I've told myself for a couple of
months that I need to do it but I've been afraid.  Since I haven't had
Hobbes tested for over a month I decided I either needed to take him in
(which I don't have time to do right now) or test him myself.

He hasn't really minded the pricks at all. I don't think they hurt him! As a
matter of fact I think he likes the special attention he's been getting
today.  When you do a curve do you stick Pearl in the same spot each time or
use a different spot? I've taken the advice I've read on the listserve and
used the lancet without the pen.  I'm not happy with the numbers (too high -
he peaked at 215) but he'll be all right until we get back from a trip this
week then I'll have 4 weeks to play with diet.  I don't want to take a
chance that he goes hypo and nobody here to catch it.

Hobbes (diabetic) and Sam (asthmatic) both send special headbutts to Pearl
and you for taking such good care of her.

Matthew,

You can help control diabetes with a low-carbohydrate diet but you'll want
to home test if you put Rumble on a really low-carb diet.  Food with gravy
has more carbs than the non-gravy food and not the recommneded choice. By
now you've probably received a number of "off-list" messages about the food
to give Rumble.  When I was faced with the decision I found the following
two tables a lot of help.

It looks like Fancy feast are the best choice for low carb and variety and
the ones with gravy in them are really not that bad  very low compared to
the others and with in a few numbers of the others in

But there are draw backs to that the Prosperous is higher
looks like on the list compared to the others you sacrifice one for the
other.  I will have some big question for the vet on Wednesday  any other
hints on what I should ask

Matthew, not a flame, but a word to the wise.  Premiums foods will be *MUCH*
better for controlling Rumble's blood sugar levels - the supermarket brands
can vary from can to can in the same flavors and they have way too many
carbohydrates and "junk" in them!!!

Also, I've found that the premium brands really aren't much more expensive
since they eat a lot less of it (it takes less to satisfy them since they
are so much more nutritionally "dense").  I've found mine like Fancy Feast
(the "new improved" flavors that list the main meat as the first
ingredient) - and my cats *LOVE* it (it made it *MUCH* easier to switch them
to canned food then when I tried even Science Diet's canned.

no worries about flames  I want to know what premium food are the best   I
just used about the off brands as a point that I never had problems.  what
ever it takes to keep rumble with us as long as possible no matter what the
cost it will be done

Matthew,

We used Purina DM for Bob, our diabetic cat. It's the diabetes
management prescription food. Some cats don't like that, but Bob did.
There are other brands (prescription) out there for diabetic cats.

Did your vet make a suggestion for a good diabetic cat food?

he offered the same as you listed but Rumble took two bites and walked away
then other cats turned their noses up at it

Ask your vet if you can moisten his dry food with salt and fat free broth like
you get at organic food places. Fritzie was so badly diabetic we gave him
prescription food from the vet, but he was stubborn and demanded variety. The
vet figured this kind of broth would be a good addition to give him the extra
flavor, which made him eat. It has next to no carbs or fat if you get a good
brand. We usually got ours from the natural foods section of the local market,
because it has no additives or salt.

Blessed be,
Baha
