Vino's hurt :-(

Strangest thing, I never noticed it last night because he was sleeping
so cutely on the bed, I didn't dare disturb him.  But this morning I
noticed a big (nickel sized) hole in his fur on his back.  He's got a
sore, looks like a couple of small abrasions but I suppose it could also
be a puncture wound.
I cleaned it off with an antiseptic towlette and Vino's walking ok.
It's Sunday and I'm off to work, but I'll probably take him to the vet
tomorrow morning.  I'll get it looked at and also see if they can change
our contact info on his microchip.  The Thai address wouldn't be too
helpful over here.

Oh, poor Vino! :(  I wonder what happened? A run-in with something
nasty out there, maybe?

Good idea - it's probably not an emergency, but should be treated now
so it won't get infected.

Purrs for Vino...I think you're probably right to get him to the vet.
If it is a puncture wound, they have a real tendency to turn into
abscesses on cats. Bikkie just got over a really nasty one.

The sooner the better.  Just the thought of some of the
stinging/biting wildlife in Australia gives me the heebie-jeebies!

It's true. The message seems to be that if something exists someplace
in the world, a vicious or deadly version of that same animal exists
in Australia. Even the ants in Australia are nasty, according to Animal
Planet at least. I've already decided that I never want to set foot on
that continent. Apologies to the humans who live there, but I just don't
like nasty creepy-crawlies.

But bears aren't poisonous! Most of them - well, the ones who aren't
grizzlies, don't associate you with food, and aren't mama bears worried
about their cubs - avoid humans. And unlike ants, you can usually see
bears coming and get out of the way!

them just want to be left alone.

I guess we're all afraid of what we're not used to. I have a particularly
strong dislike of crawling insects (flying ones don't bother me as much),
and the idea that some of them could even be deadly is more than my poor
little brain can withstand.

I've been to Australia three times and absolutely love it!  Besides all the
venomous creatures, Australia has a number of delightful, intriguing animals
and birds, as well as super-nice people.  In my three trips there, I saw
exactly one poisonous creature - a snake that had been run over - outside of
an animal park or other facility with a controlled environment.

As a matter of fact, one of the places I saw live ones was at the reptile
center in (or just outside of) Alice Springs.  The woman conducting the
tours explained that the poisonous snakes have such small teeth that if you
disturbed one in the bush and it struck, you would be very unlikely to
receive any venom at all if you were wearing boots, and even heavy jeans or
such would prevent or reduce a dose being delivered.

You have to be reasonably cautions here, but I'm less afraid of the
poisonous creatures in Australia than I am of some of the two-legged animals
prowling about our U.S. cities and suburbs.

Aww, you'd also be depriving yourself of the most glorious experiences
with wildlife.  You can't see roos, koalas, fairy penguins, and
Tasmanian Devils (not nearly as bad as their names ;)) outside of zoos
in the US.  THere are also fabulous butterflies, and it's a
birdwatcher's dream.  I wouldn't trade my time in OZ for anything.

Of course you're right. Not to mention the interesting *human* culture,
which is one of the main reason I'd want to go. I'd have to do a lot of

Yeah, I've been here for almost 3 months now, plus about another 3
months worth of vacations before that, and I've never seen anything
scary.  One cool lizard (bobtail goana) and some regular little house
spiders, not too many, that's about it.
Nothing compared to all the cool stuff, kangaroos, emus, parrots,
kookaburras, etc, and of course the usual horses, sheep, cows (they have
the cutest long haired black cows around here!) and deer (there is a
deer farm and they have hundreds grazing, it's cool to see).

Getting it looked at is definitely a good idea.  Nanki-Poo had something
like that, and it looked to me as though a bird had pulled out a big chunk
of his fur.  I still think that could be what it was.  There were tiny
pinpricks of blood, but now big wound, so I didn't worry about it, but let
it go for a day or two.  Unfortunately, it itched, and he started digging at
it and ended up with a huge sore on his back.  It took a fair amount of
treatment to get it cleared up.  The sooner the vet gets involved, the
better.

badwilson - 02 Jul 2006 11:08 GMT
Well, I got home from work 1/2 hour ago.  I looked at it again, the fur
had spread apart more so it was really obvious.  There are 2 small
abrasions and 1 puncture wound.  The puncture is a small round hole.  It
is getting kind of weeping and I squeezed quite a bit of pus out of it.
Poor Vino used some very poor language while that was happening.  Other
than that, Vino seems fine, he greeted me at the door as usual, ran
behind me as I went to the fridge and gobbled up his canned food with
gusto.  So at least he's still doing well.
I will definitely take him to the vet first thing in the morning.  Poor
bugger.  I think he must have gotten in a fight with the neighbours cat
that seems to come over the back fence.  Vino can't get over the fence
(he's not athletic) but this black cat comes over sometimes.  I will
keep an eye on Vino when he's out there more, I hope they can work it
out because I really want Vino to be able to keep enjoying the back
yard.

Its quite likely that the neighbor cat considers the back yard his own, and
hung out there before you moved in.  And he may well be a bully.  Poor Vino
isn't into having to defend his territory is he?

I'd mix a WEAK solution of ammonia and water in a spray bottle to unwelcome
the visitor.  They don't like to return to where they think they've been
peed on.

And maybe stop clipping Vino's claws.  Sounds like he could use them.

When we have an abcess, we stuff it full of Neosporin after we drain it.  At
least until we get to the vet.

Jo
badwilson - 02 Jul 2006 17:07 GMT
It's midnight and I just looked at him again.  The puncture wound seems
to have closed up and no more pus will squeeze out.  I think this is a
good sign.  I didn't let him out this evening and he has been lounging
on the bed.  I think he hates the smell of the antiseptic towlettes I've
been cleaning the wound with, but they seem to be helping so I will
continue doing it.
I'm off to bed now and will inspect again in the morning, then probably
take him to the vet even if it looks better.  I want do deal with that
microchip anyway.  I don't know what will happen with that because we
got it in Thailand (had to, to get him into Australia).  I have tried
calling and emailing the company over there, but no response.  I called
Avid in the UK and they told me that I have to register the new info in
the country where I am at.  So hopefully the vet here can tell me some
info about it.  Also want to know how urgently Vino might need a dental,
it's been 5 years since the last one.
Ok, off to bed.

Vino's wound will probably be fine--Biskit's closed up and collected
pus again after it had initially drained. So off to the vet we went. By
the time we got there, it had drained itself again. All the vet did was
give her a round of oral antibiotics, and it was fine after that.
Good luck to Vino, hope the visit goes well for him.

Persia got upset with me a couple of weeks ago and gave me a couple of good
deep scratches.  The deepest started healing but when it scabbed over it got
really itchy.  I know, don't scratch it!  But I did.  It got inflamed.  I
rubbed some hydrogen peroxide on it and then an anti-biotic ointment.  It's
healing up nicely now (and it doesn't itch!).  Maybe the same sort of
treatment would work for Vino's boo-boo?

Rusty sends purrs to Vino. Hope its nothing serious. To change the
contact on the microchip, you have to contact the company which holds
the address info.

Poor Vino.  Purrs that he is okay.

Purrs and gentle headbutts on the way for Vino.  Selena asked me to suggest
to you allergies, since Vino has so recently moved to Australia and could
possibly be allergic to something in the air that he's never encountered
before.  She used to have "hot spots" that would erupt into the same size
wounds that looked absolutely horrible! Usually when I found one that size
there would be smaller ones somewhere on her body as well. Because she's not
a cat that likes to be handled (and she has long hair) I wouldn't find the
spots until they erupted.  The good news is that they are relatively easily
treated and if you can find the cause you might be able to eliminate it from
his environment.

Purrs for you as well, Brita, since anytime time our babies are hurt we
hurt.

Poor V-man!  Do you think he had some encounter with something or
other when you weren't looking?

Get well soon purrs for Vino-- he seemed to be thriving so much in his
new home.

Oh, NO!  Getting him to the v*t seems wise.  Purrs that it's nothing
serious.

Poor Vino.  It sounds like an abscess that has ruptured. Has he tangled with
any other cats lately?

Purrs are on the way from Charleston, S.C., where we have moved from the
anchorage to a dock.

I'll be looking for an update on Vino's injury and wish him a speedy
recovery.

Oh no!! Purrs a-comin for Vino. Kitties should never be hurt and always be
loved like crazy, like you do. And I love a cat named for something
intoxicating! :-)

Blessed be,
Baha

Getting an occasionally ouchie is an occupational hazard of being an
indoor/outdoor kitty.  I'm sure he'll be fine soon.

Oh no!  Poor Vino, our almost-tailless little orange baby!  Purrs!

Do definitely get the microchip info updated.  I'm going to have to remember
to do that when I move at the end of the year.
