I found her today!!!

She was trapped in a neighbor's garage. I can't tell whether she was
there the whole week or not. I was about to get in my car a few hours
ago, when I heard a cat yowling. It didn't actually sound like her,
but I went to check anyway, of course, and it was coming from a garage.
In fact, it was a garage I'd checked last weekend (I had called to her
from outside the garage door), but she hadn't responded at that time,
so that makes me think she wasn't there last week. But it's hard to
tell. Maybe she was asleep the previous time I was there.

This time, she was crying loudly, and the more I listened, the more
it did sound like Smudge. I walked around to the side of the building
and saw a window. Looked through, and there she was! I can't describe
the feeling I had when I saw her there.

I couldn't open the window, and the garage door was locked, so I ran
around to the front of the building, which was on a different street.
Rang the bell, and a bunch of people were having a Shabbos gathering.
I felt bad about crashing their observance, but this was an emergency
to me, so I got someone to let me into their garage. But it was the
wrong garage! I was at the wrong house.

Finally, I figured out which house belonged to the garage she was
stuck in, and I rang that bell. Nobody was home, though, and it was
hard to tell if there had been anyone there for a while. They could
have been away on vacation, for who knows how long. You have no idea
how loud her howling was - if they had been there, they certainly
would have heard it.

So I came home (while Smudge continued to yowl loud enough for the
entire neighborhood to hear), and called Animal Control. No answer.
Called non-emergency police and asked what I could do. They said,
"You can't do anything, all you can do is leave them a note." You
have no idea how frustrating that was! They also said they couldn't
help, as it would be illegal for them to break into the garage, also.

I went back over there and tried to figure out how I could get her
out without actually breaking anything, including any laws. While I
was doing this, one of my neighbors, who has been apprised of the
situation since Smudge went missing, came over and we tried to brainstorm.
Then another guy who lives on our street showed up, and we pulled on
the garage door together, outward so that it came out at an angle
big enough for her to squeeze through. She was frantic to get out of
there - her paws came first, then her head, and then the rest of her.
I grabbed her and picked her up, and she was purring up a storm.
Then brought her back to my place.

She looked OK, although she had a few scabs on her face, so I brought
her to the vet just to make sure they weren't injuries from a fight,
that might get infected. Turns out she'd lost over a pound (and she's
really scarfing down the food!). They also took a blood sample to make
sure she's not suffering any kidney problems, due to possible
dehydration (and she is 9 years old, so that could happen) and sent
me home with subq fluids just in case. I'm sure it will help her feel
better. The vet didn't think the scabs were anything worrisome, she
probably got them trying to free herself from the garage, or wherever
she was.

Poor girl, she's had quite a tough week! And so have I. We're both
really relieved that it's over now. I'm just going to let her sleep
it off, and eat as much as she needs, give her the fluids, and cuddle
with her as much as she likes! What a relief!!

Thank you all for your "get home now" purrs - I'm sure they helped!

I'm so happy I could cry!  What a WONDERFUL subject to see in the
message list!  You did so well to find her.  After she had been gone
for a week, I was at a total loss as to what happened.  If she only
lost a pound after this ordeal, that's pretty good.  I guess cats
really are desert creatures.

Hurray!!!  No matter how many reports others can give of
cats who have disappeared for long periods and returned home
realtively unscathed, it's always worrisome when it's one of
our own who goes missing. (And of course, we are aware of
all the cats who go missing and are never found, which tends
to make believing the hopeful tales a kind of "clutching at
straws".)  So glad she's home and basking in her person's
affection, again.

I didn't want to use this word when Smudge was missing, but I think
that it's a miracle.  It's a miracle that she was locked in a garage

Oh, Joyce, I'm crying tears of happiness here! I actually clapped my
hands when I read how her paws came out, then her head. I am so, so
happy for you both. Purrs that Smudge didn't develop any health problems

What a wonderful sight that must have been!  I can't picture anything
more wonderful.  I couldn't have been happier if Condoleezza Rice had
crawled out from under a garage door and proposed to me.

Smudge is saying that her meowmie is a superhero who can bend doors
and leap tall buildings in order to save her!

Condoleezza Rice? OK, that's just bizarre, Tak. :)

However, it was a wonderful sight indeed to watch her paws (very anxious
paws being *thrust* through the opening), her head, and then, the effort
she had to make to squeeze the rest of herself through. I stood there and
cheered her on: "Squeeze on through, Smudge! C'mon, Smudgie, squeeze on
through!"

> Smudge is saying that her meowmie is a superhero who can bend doors

Well, my neighbor was the superhero who bent the door, but I was there
on the scene. :) I was cheering her on. I whisked her off the ground
the minute she was out of there. (And took her to TED, what a terrible
homecoming! :))

You know, I'm developing a theory. She was in that garage, yet I didn't
hear her yowling at all, any time during the entire week. I thought I
heard quiet cries, but to tell the truth, I still hear them now. There
are just a lot of high-pitched sounds in the neighborhood - kids, cars
with music, birds, other cats, etc. Some of it could've been her, but
perhaps not.

But there's a window on that garage, from which there's a direct line
of sight to where I was getting into my car, when I heard the cries. I
think she saw me! She saw me and started yelling for me. And maybe the
other times I went out to the car during the week, or was walking around
the neighborhood (looking for her!) and was in view of that window, she
didn't happen to be looking out of it, so didn't see me.

So maybe she wasn't motivated to meow loudly at those times, because
she didn't realize I would hear it. But you could hear it from my
computer room, when I had come back here to call the cops about getting
into their garage. I definitely would have heard her if she'd meowed
like that at *any* time during the week while I was home!

As one of my neighbors had said to me, the night before she disappeared,
she's a very loyal cat. And I think once she saw me, she knew I'd get
her out of there!

This is such a happy ending.  I agree that Smudge was probably in that
garage all week.  I don't imagine even she is unlucky enough to have
gotten stuck in two different places in the same week!

I can imagine that there was a lot of fussing and purring and hugging
going on.  After a week, you'd start feeling that anything could have
happened, and that you might never see her again.  Hanging on to hope,
and having that hope come true when the chances seemed to become
slimmer day by day, that must be a great feeling.

Woke up this morning with three cats on the bed. Interestingly, when
Smudge was gone, the other two didn't always sleep with me. Sometimes
Roxy slept at the end of the bed, but Licky never did.

But as soon as Smudge was back, and got into her usual position, curled
up next to my waist, the other ended up on the bed, too. Maybe they
wanted a piece of the action? Or maybe they were just following her
example. Cat dynamics are certainly strange.

Hooray for you and Smudge!

Is Smudge usually an indoor-only cat?  Because when indoor-only cats get
out, they get scared and sometimes don't come even when their humans call
for them.  They can be right next to you, hiding under something, and be
too scared to come out.

Oh, I wasn't being snotty or anything. I was saying, "Please, feel
free to say 'I told you so', because that is so much better than the
alternative!"

She seems better today, although still kind of spacey and slow-moving.
I don't think she's in pain, it's not like that, her body seem OK. But
she just kind of stands around and stares a lot, like when you walk
into a room and forget why you're there. :) She used to have a lot more
motivation and decisiveness about what she wanted to do, but now she
just seems very quiet and subdued. I guess she's still getting over the
trauma.

She was so sooty when I first found her - all her white fur had turned
grey. But now she's clean again, so I know she's taking care of herself.
And lord knows, she sure is eating! I've given her subq fluids twice, so
I think she's OK on that score, too. Today, I took her out on a leash and
she seemed to enjoy that a lot. I had a couple of friends with me, and
we sat out on the sidewalk in the sun, while Smudge rolled around on the
cement (she loves that). So I guess it'll just take a while for her to
get back to normal, but she's progressing, anyway.
