I hate carpet, I always have. But this house we're renting has it in
the bedrooms.
It's funny because Vino considers it to be a horizontal scratching post.
We try to discourage it, but have been less than successful so far. At
least it's a really sturdy fake sisal carpet and has not shown any wear
and tear so far.
Anyway, when I go to bed, Vino cuddles for a bit, then leaves to do his
nightly perimeter patrol, followed by bedtime snack of kibble. Then he
comes back to bed.
Usually, by this time, I'm falling asleep. But now that we have carpet
in the bedroom, I can actually *hear* him come in! It's very eerie
sounding, like an intruder tip-toeing on the carpet. I know he's trying
to be quiet, but he just can't be any quieter than he is.
The first few nights it scared the bejeezus outta me! But now I'm more
used to it. It's funny, I'll be lying there, huddled under the blanket
(shivering, because it's so gawd-damn cold over here) and all of a
sudden I'll hear this shuffling on the carpet.
I'll be like "Oh no! It's a robber!" Then I'll be like: "Oh, it's just
Vino. Get over here, ya bastard! I deserve a cuddle after that!"

Sisal is pretty strong and will stand up to cat scratching for a long
time. But no wonder Vino thinks it's a scratching post - that's what
most scratching posts are made of!

It's ironic that the carpet makes him more audible. I've always had the
opposite experience - carpets muffle sound. Of course, I'm talking about
the sound of humans walking, their shoes on the floor, etc - much louder
on a bare floor. I haven't noticed my cats sounding any louder on the
carpeted rooms in my apartment than on the bare-floor rooms (kitchen, eg).
LOL that he was "trying to be quiet". A bit of projection there, perhaps? :)
