Cleo has a ritual she follows every night. She starts bringing her toys to
my office door any time after 9:00 pm and yodeling her head off. This means
that it's time for all good slaves to be in bed. If I go to the bathroom
anytime after this ritual starts, we must stop every three feet for a tummy
rub. She enjoys this very much and it usually followed by much rolling over.
But it also gives her occasion to be mischievous and if you are not paying
attention, you may loose a finger or two.
Tonight Cleo was on my lap on the couch and I thought I would test her love
of the tummy rub. I put my hand under her front legs and lifted her back
against my chest to rub her tummy. Dogs like this, but cats don't like the
exposed position. Cleo did not care in the least, she made no attempt to
escape and was loving the tummy rubbing. She is our very self assured little
kitty.

How funny! Stinky herds me to bed too. ;)

They don't? Smokey has us fooled.
My dad had a cat and he used to pick him up, turn him upside down so
that his head was facing down and his tail up, put him back-first
against his thighs (head pointing at ground, tail pointing to father's
waist), and pet his belly, using the friction of the petting to stop
the cat from falling headfirst to the ground. And Lostie, the silly
twit, would purr and purr, utterly oblivious to the fact that any sane
cat should be buggin' at the very idea.

There are so many cats who will defy all conventional cat wisdom. My
dad used to have a little girl next door who would tote her 15-pound
cat around, draped over her two forearms, with his butt swinging free,
and that cat would relax just like the boneless cat from "Peanuts."
Leaving aside for the moment whether it was good for the cat (it
probably wasn't), the cat just chilled like that. Stinky loves tummy
rubs. Dante is ambivalent, but leaning towards loving them-- you
still have to be careful of tummy traps with him. My little Mimi (RB)
used to love being completely wrapped in a big towel and rubbed down
vigorously. How did we know, you ask? Well, she always liked what
seemed like extreme rubdowns-- very firm handling, brushing -- amazing
with her tiny bones. SHe used to jump on the bed for what we used to
call "the nightly beating."
So one day I just tried the towel thing. She went absolutely
bonkers, and it became routine. She would come running when she saw
the towel.

Hehehe. I used to be oh so careful when petting Miranda, because she's
so tiny and frail, you know. 'Frail' indeed. One time I watched her and
Caliban wrestle, and Caliban wanted to get out but Miranda kept jumping
at him. So I decided later to see if she would like to be manhandled
just a little bit. She loved it when I gave her the rough stuff! So now
we have a daily beating ritual here, too. Frail little Miranda. Hah!
She didn't like the towel, though, after I gave her the dip for
ringworm. Maybe she'd like it if she didn't have to get wet first. :oP

Note:
For the record "sane cat" is very likely a contradiction in terms
