I finally remembered to ask my niece about her camera. It's a Canon EOS
10D, and the lens is a Sigma DC 18-50mm 1:2.8 EX. She bitterly tells me
the camera went out of production right after she had bought it, and the
new Canon lenses don't fit this model. The newer model is 20D, but she
says it doesn't really have any features she needs that the old one
doesn't have, except quicker focusing and better sensitivity to light.

I'll never buy another canon camera.  I have an old one that takes terrific
pictures but it has a battery that is built in that has to go back to the
company to be replaced.  Granted it lasts for about 10 years but it isn't
like you know when it will go out or can get a quick or inexpensive fix.  Or
like we knew anything about it until it went out the first time.  Sheesh.

I would have thought, rather than avoiding a particular make, just be sure
the battery is not built in on any camera you buy. My sister has a Canon and
the battry isn't built in, maybe they've changed.

I'm glad to hear it's a Canon, cuz that's what Tom wants to get next. :)
Hopefully soon we'll be able to take pictures as clear as your sister's.
