New allergies?

I was tested for allergies when I was young and showed a mild allergy to
Mold, Dust, Tea/Coffee. No pet allergies indicated. Other than the odd
sneezing fit in my office (Dust Central) I've never really had an issue and
I drink Tea by the pot.

But I've occasionally noticed, I get very short of breath if I pick up Cali
and exert myself. This is a very rare occurrence lately, as Cali does not
like to be picked up and I'm the scum of the earth since Cleo joined our
group. I don't notice this so much with Smokey, probably because she has
shorter hair.

The last little while I've been short of breath, which has made sleeping a
bit of a pain. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of allergy and nothing more
serious. This seemed to crop up after I had a bad flu a few months back. OTC
antihistamines seem to help a little, but they certainly don't make my
breathing normal.

Has anyone else developed pet allergies they apparently didn't have before?
Do those air cleaners do much for your problem? Did duct cleaning help your
problem?

I'd be seeing a doctor to make sue all the stuff from the flu has really
cleared up.

As for the cats, get in the habit of keeping your hands off your face.  And
wash your hands after a good scritch session with the masters.

(It isn't the cat fur.  Its the cat spit they use to wash with.  Wiping cats
down daily with a damp washcloth doesn't hurt either.)

Thanks, been twice already, once to the Walk-in and once to the regular guy.
The first suggested I sleep twelve hours a day if I was still tired.
Fuckhead. The regular guy said it was getting better (8 weeks later) and
anti-biotics would not help a virus (if it really was) anyway. But they both
agreed it was not pneumonia, so that's a plus.

Yeah, I think it was Britta that had the sig about the cats being covered in
spit.

Since I started fostering I've found some cats and kittens make me
wheeze (didn't have a problem in 20 years of owning cats). I take an
anti-histamine if the offending kitty stays with me for more than a
couple of weeks. I haven't tried and air cleaner.

If you're allergic to dust it might not be the CAT you're having a
problem with - cats spend a lot of time rolling around in dusty places
(like under beds and behind dressers) and their fur gets very dusty
and dirty... you don't notice it much with a short-haired or
light-coloured cat, but Tessie is always crawling out of hidey holes
absolutely FILTHY!

LOL, don't worry the kitties are safe. They're too busy sleeping ON the bed
to get dirty UNDER the bed. :)

Yes, it is possible to develop new allergies at any age.  I developed asthma
when I was about 35 and hay fever some time after that.  My mother wasn't at
all allergic to poison oak when she was a child.  In fact, she used to freak
people out by rubbing it on her arms.  She was about 35 when she took my
brother and me hiking.  She came home with a severe poison oak rash.

When I was tested about 25 years ago, I tested negative for allergies to
dogs and cats.  A few years ago I was retested, and came up with a mild
positive to both.

Your shortness of breath sounds like asthma to me.  I suggest a visit to an
allergist.  I had a few really bad asthma attacks.  Then my allergist
prescribed Singulaire.  I take one tablet a day, and haven't had an attack
in years.  There are also inhalers to prevent or stop asthma attacks, as
well as pills to treat them.

Most definitely.  I was tested for allergies when I was 23, and tested
negative for everything.
My last test indicated allergic reactions to cats, dogs, tobacco,
timothy grass, oak....you name it.  What a pain.
AND I have asthma too.  It came on slowly, but boy what a pain!

You need to see an allergist AND a pulmonologist.  Get yourself set up
nicely there.  And buy a supply of Mucinex. It'll keep the mucus
flowing so it won't create a sinus infection.

Thanks Jane, I hope to make it back to the doc this week. I'm pretty sure
it's allergy/asthma related, with the sneezing and constricted nasal
passages. Breathing through my mouth helps somewhat, though not a lot.

I've been having hay fever for the past 4 years that I've never had
before (I'm 41 years old).
Lots of purrs and best wishes for your allergy to subside,
Polonca and Soncek
