Oscar the forgiving

Last night I managed to step on Oscar, who was sprawled in the middle
of the hallway taking a nap (sigh).  She yowled and ran into the
bedroom, where she hid behind the chest of drawers.

After I coaxed her a few times by calling her name, she stuck her head
out.  "Oscar, I'm so sorry."  She hissed at me; clearly the apology
wasn't enough, although the hiss seemed somewhat subdued.  I
apologized again, and this time stuck my fingers close to her head in
a gesture of trust and appeasement.  She sniffed them, then
reluctantly headbutted me in a, "It's okay; you're a dork, but hey,
you're all I have here" kind of way.

Not only did I wanted to apologize to her, I really wanted to make
sure that she was walking okay and hadn't been injured at all --
fortunately, she was fine.

Doesn't that make you feel so quilty?

When I first got Rusty, he sat under my rocking chair without my
knowing. I sat on the
rocking chair and heard a loud scream. Poor cat was running around with
me chasing
after him to make sure I didn't crush him. He turned out fine. Since
then I learned to
make sure Rusty is not under the chair before I rocked it.

It always scares me -- they're so small and we're so big!  (Well, *I*
am -- I seem to recall you're pretty light.)

I still have guilty memories of stepping on Pan and breaking his poor
little hind leg. =o(  After many incidences of stepping on under-foot
cats and hearing the complaint, I didn't even realize at first that I'd
actually hurt him. That wasn't a happy day for either of us, the poor
little guy! He did forgive me, though. And he learned to maneuver his
way around even while wearing a splint and a big clumsy bandage.

I'm glad Oscar wasn't injured, though.

Thanks.  I am, too.  Today she's being all kittenish -- first I had my
sneakers on, but untied, the lace ends clattering against the kitchen
floor.  Oscar heard it and went halloween-cat, complete with sideways
jumps.  Hysterical.

Since then she's been doing that kind of thing all night.  Maybe she's
affected by the storm.  We had quite a downpour.  DH just got his new
car, so we went on a little ride a bit ago.  Just absolutely gorgeous
lightning splitting the sky.

Unfortunately, just last week a motorcyclist commuter was hit by
lightning.  The strike left a four inch deep pothole and killed the
rider -- still not clear what about the accident actually caused the
death, but pretty scary.  It's not like you can choose to avoid storms
around here.  Not like it's all that common of an occurance -- I've
never heard of a rider being struck by lightning like that.

Last year, a guy here was hit by lightning as he came out from a
shopping mall into the parking lot. He was seriously hurt. Last I
heard, he was still disabled. Scary stuff. Like Rusty, I am afraid of
the thunder. During last week's thunder storm,  I put Rusty in the
carrier and we wen to sit in the outside hallway. The power suddenly
went out and we sat in the dark until the emergency power kicked in and
some lights in the hallway came on.

I went on the scale at the vet the other day when I picked up Rusty's
prescription food.
Barely  made 100 lb. Rusty weighed in just under 9 lb last time he was
at the vet. So I am  still over 10X his weight.

By the way, Rusty's Chinese name is  . I just learned how to
write Chinese with my mouse on an IME pad.  Hope you can see it. The
name means Little Tiger.

Oh poor Oscar!

When I had my little mutt Sampson was a pup, I came home from work and was
in the kitchen starting dinner.  I was wearing high heels (please don't ask
me why I thought I should cook dinner wearing my work clothes, looking like
June Cleaver).  I stepped backwards and stepped right on his paw.  OH NO!
He ran and hid under the bed.  Oh no!  My poor little baby!  Luckily he
wasn't hurt but I felt so awful.  He forgave me but I know how you feel.
