elderly cat yowling

Casey has been yowling loudly for about 4 days and I took him to the
vets last night. They took blood, urine and his blood pressure and told
me today that he is normal. So, that leave a behavior problem. He is 11
and the vet said he could be getting senile but only an MRI could
determine that. She didn't recommend any medication but told me to call
next week if he started doing anything worse.

Any ideas?  I also asked in rec.pets.health and healing newsgroup.

All is normal with eating, pooping and sleeping. No changes in the
household. He just wanders into different rooms and yowls and it lasts
all morning and until 11pm. He sleeps all night and when he wakes up at
5am or so, he starts the yowling again. I thought he could have been in
pain and took him to the vet, but now I am not knowing what it could
be. At least, it's not medical.

Do you think he is having trouble hearing?

no.  tested at home and at the vets.  his hearing seems fine.  Because
he is a Himalayan, that breed is prone to kidney problems.  The vet
said his urn?  was elevated a little.  That is related to kidneys and
the cat being dehyrated.  But, when we came home Casey drank almost a
whole bowl of water and ate a healthy portion of food.  I told the vet
that and she said all was okay then.  Just to watch him and call next
week.
Thanks for the response.  I am worried about him.  He never acted this
way before.  Oh yes, he talks a lot and yowls sometimes, but not like
this last week.  He would yowl and yowl to be picked up to the bathroom
counter to look at himself in the mirror.  That would shut him up for
30 mintues or so.  The vet said maybe he is just taking on a new
behavior.

How much attention does he get?

He is my velco cat.  I hold him like a baby and carry him around.  He
is almost glued to me at all times.  A very needy cat.  He has always
been this way because as a kitten he was sick.  Almost died at 9 weeks
from respiratory illness.

This last week with the yowling he has wandered away from me and I go
pick him up and carry him back to the living room and he just wanders
away to the bathroom or bedroom yowling like he is lost.

My initial thought was that it could be sign of deafness, but if
you've determined that his hearing is ok then you might want to look
into possible stress or anxiety issues. Have there been any recent
changes to his environment? Maybe any new cats visiting the yard that
he can see through the windows?

You might want to start putting Rescue Remedy in his water.

his water, in case it's a stress or anxiety problem. You're pretty sure
it's not a deafness issue?

no, I checked by calling him from another room and he comes when
called.  The vet also checked his hearing while I was there.  There
haven't been any new cats around and no new changes in the household.
I put the air conditioner on, but that is about it.  He has lived in
this house for 11 years and nothing has changed.  Thanks for the idea
though.  I read about the hearing issue on health and behavior and
thought maybe that was it too.

[ yowling cat issue ]

Could it be that the air conditioner is emitting ultrasonic noise or
anything else you can't hear, but the cat can and is suffering from? I
can very well imagine a fan or a bearing emitting such noises, maybe
due to a defect in progress. Test it: switch AC off.

He might be going senile.  Our precious did this in the last 2 year of her
life
She would continue to yowl till we walked over and tapped her on the head
she stop  but soon would do this again.
She was going deaf  but we also think she was losing it near the end  she
was 19.5  she died less than 6 months ago

Eleven isn't elderly for a normal cat.  Just mature.

Did it start suddenly?  Any changes in his routine or household?

I'd wonder about his hearing but that wouldn't be sudden.  Maybe he hears so
smells something you don't.

Maybe there are some unwelcome visitors on his property. Stosh goes bats
and yowls and cusses at every squirrel who comes around, or at the suitors
who come to the front window to flirt with the Ladies. Maybe Casey just
wants to defend his little patch of territory, whether he goes out or not.
(ours stay in, but it doesn't stop Stosh.)

Blessed be,
Baha

Thanks for all your help.  I don't know what he is doing.  I think he
is looking for a girlfriend.  Yesterday he was on the balcony in the
pouring down rain yowling.  He was getting drenched and just howling
and yowling as loud as can be.  The weekend gave me an opportunity to
watch him closely and he did sleep and act normally a lot of the time.
He is just anxious about something.  He is an indoor only cat and he
even tried to get out the front door which he never does.  Well, maybe
this too shall pass with time.

Stosh will try to step out if there are more squirrels than normal hanging
around or if one of the neighborhood Toms has been coming to call overnight.
Usually his noising comes overnight, or the very early morning. Fortunately we
have a breezeway you have to go through before you can actually get into the
house, so Stosh never gets any further away than two or three feet if he does
sneak by. I think it's a game for him; he doesn't run or put up a fight when we
tell him "NO, Stoshu!" and pick him up. Since he likes his hug whenever we come
in, I think it's a ploy for a pick-up.

Blessed be,
Baha

I do hope you can find a way to stop Casey from yowling. Soncek yowled
for 3 consecutive nights in winter because of the sound snowplouhgs made.
Best wishes,
Polonca and Soncek

Good thing Rusty didn't yowl when the snowplow was  running. I live
right above a parkling  lot and the snowplow usually worked in the
middle of night. It was loud enough without  cats yowling. There are
quite a few cats living in the building. Imagine all of them
yowling while the snowplows roared.
