I've read it, and I know it's suppose to be true, but...

The new place I'm moving to has an *excellent* cat box room in the basement.
There's an old louver sliding door on it.  I was thinking about cutting the
bottom off, so the cats could go under it...  but it would be DARK in there.
I just wanna make sure the cats are okay with this.

I mean, *I* can find my toilet in the middle of the night w/out turning a
light on!!

What do y'all think?  Is dark okay for the "cat's potty room"???

If there is in unused electrical outlet, I'd install a plug-in night
light - a little light goes a *long* way with cats, especially with
dark adapted ones.

If you can find your way to the toilet in the dark, a cat certainly
can. Their vision in the dark is 6 times better than ours. Of course,
if it's pitch black - absolutely no light at all - that won't help,
since six times zero is still zero. :) Is there a little bit of light?
If so, it's probably fine.

Bandit manages to find her box just fine, and she's recently blind.  MaryL's
Duffy is blind also, but from birth I think, and I've never heard her say he
has a problem either.

Bandit is blind now? I seem to recall your posting that her sight was
failing, but I did not know she had lost it. Poor little thing.

Yeah, she's seen 3 different vets in the last couple of months.  They did a
geriatric bloodwork and everything was in normal ranges for even a young cat
(Bandit is 16 now), her BUN and creatinin levels were fine.  They tested her
urine and blood pressure and both were fine.  They looked into her eyes very
carefully and the retinas were fully attached, there wasn't even a trace of
cataracts, and all the blood vessels looked healthy.  The last vet surmised
that there might be a tumor pressing on her optic nerves at the bottom part
of the front of her brain.  Since there is nothing I could do in that case
anyway, I didn't take her to have an MRI for confirmation of this since she
gets *SO* upset at the vets (I would too if I'd been burned on 40% of my
body and had to have my skin removed from the results of a tooth cleaning!).
I wouldn't want to put her through anesthesia just to tell me something I
couldn't do anything about.

She's not in any pain at all, still eats lustily in obvious enjoyment, purrs
up a storm during our skritching session, and manages to find her way around
without any problems (and beats the snot out of any cat who happens to get
in her way).  So, I'm just taking all the good days I get and trying not to
think about the future at this point.  I'm just hoping the end comes easily
(don't we all wish our babies would go in their sleep at a *very* advanced
age??!).

We use one of those automatic nightlights in the hall. It throws off
plenty of light for a cat, but uses hardly any energy and they're very
inexpensive. If you don't have outlets down there, try one of those
stick-up lights that are battery-operated.
But if you're talking about just very dim light, and not pitch-black, I
don't think the cats would mind at all. I think they like secluded,
quiet places for the box. As long as they're not infirm or anything
that would make the stairs a problem for them.

It's definately OK the cats will have no trouble at all finding it.
