My mom got a package of arts-crafts pipecleaners-- the especially
thick, fuzzy kind, in bright colors-- for her kids at school. And as
soon as I saw that, I knew that *some* living in this house were not
going to be able to resist them.
Indeed, when she took them to school yesterday morning, she ended up
having to pay the kitty tax, and leave a couple of them here. Before
they were released into play, though, I twisted the ends around to
tuck in and cover the little wire, and keep it from poking out and
maybe hurting someone. And while I was doing that, I *swear*, Dante
was doing a litttle dance up with wild eyes, and down and going "NYOW!
NYOW! NYOW!" ;)
We now have pipe cleaners along with the drinking straws everywhere.

What is it about that shape? Add to those "toys" q-tips and emory
boards.

Maybe they look like rat tails to a cat? My cats are completely
riveted by the sight of something long and thin disappearing around
a corner, or under a rug. Maybe they think (or hope) it's attached
to a rodent at the other end. :)

It looks to me like Dante is intrigued by the "springiness" of the
pipe cleaner.

Miranda is crazy about all kinds of string. I've never met another cat
with such a fixation on string. If I'm too lazy to pull a string around
for her and she wants to play, she will pick up one end of a string and
pull it along while watching the other end trailing after her. Sometimes
she pounces on the trailing end. It is so cute, and at the same time
makes me feel so guilty for being a bad Meowmie, that I inevitably go
over and play with the string for her. She has a shoestring that is very
ratty by now, it's been chewed and 'washed' in the water bowl and drug
along every surface of the house. She loves that shoestring.

Oscar has a string fixation -- unfortunately, she eats them. No
string for her. I hung a little mousie off of the cat tree, and what
did she go after? The string. *sigh*
I guess we're lucky, though, because for some reason shoelaces haven't
attracted her attention.

Around here Missy's fixation is dental floss. No problem with
shoelaces, twine, other string-like things but let me or DW get out the
floss and we have Missy's immediate and fully-focused attention. When
we're done with it, Missy immediately claims it (she usually waits that
long:)). Then it's playtime with whoever had the floss. Most of the
time we can get by with a 5-10 minutes session.
One time DW and I shared a bowl of popcorn and thereafter both required
floss. Missy couldn't decide whose was more attractive so she bounced
between us checking out floss!

Me too! =o) I can just see him doing that! Gives me the inspiration to
go find some pipe cleaners to turn into cat toys. Nina is trotting
around the apartment carrying her birthday present -- a brand new
drinking straw to maul to death. A velvet catnip mousie stuffed with
the world's finest 'nip would not please her more. If planet Earth is
ever attacked by long, tubular aliens, they'll make a run back to their
spaceships after they see how Nina deals with their leader! Obviously,
we'll be well protected by Dante if we're ever attacked by long, fuzzy
aliens.

Cool! Do they like Q-tips, too?
