I just emailed this to a fellow netizen of this newsgroup, but I thought a
subset of that email was good for a post.
*************
I've been reading up on Maine Coon cats and American Bobtails.
Both are strikingly similar to Max.
He was pure feral, born out of a 12,000 acre forest, lived with me by
choice, could leave at any time, but these descriptions are so like my
posts.

Like the first time I saw Max: I'll paraphrase....
" Your eyes meet and you are drawn to a far away place where hearts run wild
and free. ...
Tentatively you reach for the amazing animal. ... He is a thing of the wild,
of that you are sure....
Affectionate, intelligent and gentle, your heart has been stolen by wild
cat.  And his by you. "

Read the actual text here:

Max had this amazingly expressive trill.

" Even their voices set them apart from other cats; they have a distinctive,
chirping trill which they use for everything from courting to cajoling their
people into playing with them. "

" A Maine Coon will be your companion, your buddy, your pal, but hardly ever
your baby. "

I'm so glad this newsgroup exists.
Max truly changed my life.

I can talk about it on the net and with a few folks I meet.

You are an idiot of the worst kind. Poor Max.

I love hearing you talk about him. How are the newbies settling in?

It sounds like Max did have some breed-specific traits. Nearly all cats
do, of some breed or another.
He was Max, and it sounds like he was a grand cat. I still remember the
story you told about how he'd bring you the Q-tips. How funny!

Max was a great friend. A unique individual among the many cats who've
crossed my path over the last half-century.
The vet never could say how the septic abcess occurred.
I've had outside cats live as long as 18 years and inside cats not so long.
Go figure.
But I never before had an independent feral cat fall in love with me and
move in.

The day previous to becoming ill, Max got his annual car ride to the vet for
vaccinations and appeared fine.
It could have been a reaction to vaccination, one of the rabbits he ate
later that day, a spider bite; We'll never know.
The vet always commented on how much Max enjoyed his ear inspection.
"Clean as a whistle."

Now I have saved Bill & Lily from cages and euthanasia and they are happy to
be here.
Those two won't go far. Outside is anathema to them.
Lily likes to open cabinets and drawers. Never know where I'll find her.
Bill is a sweet, cuddly couch potato who loves catnip.

Cheers
H.
