Abstract thought in cats and dogs

The independent AC repair guy out here is a fellow employee of a large,
seminal semiconductor company that sold out to China a decade ago.
I say that because we worked together in a factory where, for an instant,
the product was perfect.
We made 100% yields. The first ever anywhere. That is a bond.

.......anyway, back to cat anecdotes...

Yesterday I was telling him about my relationship with the free, wild kitty
Max and he responded.

He had an Austrailian Shepard, Annie, for whom he acquired a puppy for
company.

The puppy was scared and hid under the couch.
My friend's family was coaxing the pup to come out of hiding.
Annie was watching. And obviously thinking.

Annie goes outside and gets her favorite toy;
Drops it just outside the pup's reach, and she moves it back, coaxing the
terrified puppy out.

Abstract thought is NOT an exclusively human trait.

Nor is vocal language.
Max's vocabulary was quite large.
His meanings quite clear.

And because of Max's love, I shall share Max's hill with as many cats and
dogs and others as I can.

We are all kin.
Cheers

This would make a good story for their next book at Animals are Smarter
than Jack - www.smarterthanjack.com.  That's just the type of true story
they love to receive.

Some dogs, on the other hand, are smarter than others.

My brother's dog, Bear, was making the rounds, begging various family
members to throw his rope toy.  Eventually the humans got tired of it
... so Bear dropped the toy in front of my cat, Oscar.

I think the toy weighed at least half what Oscar did.  She just stared
at him as if to communicate, "You are dumber than toast."

I've had a few of those, too.
chuckle

But when you really need stupid, get a human.

OTOH I witnessed Zurie, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, perform mouth-to-mouth on her
own last, still born pup.
He grew up just fine thank you.

The runt of Zurie's second litter helped me raise my kids. (They are both
out of college.)

The runt who grew to 120 pounds and carried my son's 7 pound cat around in
his mouth.
ahhhhhh critters
gotta love 'em

*sings* Memories ....

When I was a kid, our friends' german shepherd also carried one
particular cat around in his mouth.  They both seemed to be happy with
the arrangement.
