I stopped at the little store down the street and there was a very young dog
out there with teats hanging almost to the ground. Obviously a stray who
had recently given birth and had pups someplace. Another guy and I each
bought a can of Alpo and put it out by the store under the awning where it
wouldn't get wet.
She wouldn't let me get close to her. She looked like she wanted to, but
obviously she doesn't trust people. (Abused?) She went across the street
and laid down in the grass. Maybe she'll go eat the food we put out. Poor
thing.
She looked a little like a chocolate labrador with golden brown eyes and
soft floppy ears. I hope she doesn't get hit by a car. That's a busy
intersection. Do you think animal control would do anything? But then, I
have no idea where her pups are hidden and they can't be left without a
momma dog. Her teats weren't dried up; she's suckling. I felt terrible
just leaving her there but she wouldn't let me near her. All we could do
was hope she'll go back and eat the Alpo we set out for her. Last sighting
she was drinking water from a puddle; we just had a nasty storm here.

How sad! At least I hope she eats the food.
