They seem to be able to smell it on each other, or something.

Oddly, the cat didn't look like it was dying or touching noses with the

Interesting. A couple of years ago, I got really frustrated on a
mountain bike ride (with the bike, actually, it's a long story) and
sat down on the side of the trail to have a good cry. A deer
materialized from the surrounding woods and came very close. Once I
stopped crying and pulled myself together, it wandered off.
