I'm up late having an insomnia bout and trying to get some work done, when I
hear all this knocking and scratching. I look over and see Ana's (5 month
old foster kitten) head peeking out from behind the bookcase. There's maybe
3-4 inches between the side bookcase and the wall, it's long and runs the
length of the wall. She can't just walk out from behind it. She must have
gotten on top and jumped behind there. Why? I don't know. So, she's
mewing and trying to scale her way back up, I'm trying to move the very
heavy and stuff-laden shelves to give her room to get out. While I'm doing
this, she does manage to scale the back of the bookcase and climb out.
I go back to work. Well, all this excitement has created much interest in
The Land Behind the Bookcase. So much bigger Bartleby, about 16 lbs,
decides he needs to go see what's back there and jumps behind the bookcase.
Then he decides he needs to immediately flee The Land Behind the Bookcase.
Now he's trying to scale the back of the case and I'm trying to get him
free. He needs a much bigger opening than Ana did. I move the bookcase a
bit so I can get him out, then 3 other cats decide to jump back there, since
it must be so exciting.
I give up!

The same reason why our cats love it behind the TV. And behind the
computer armoire, back when they were kittens, because they don't fit
anymore. And underneath the aquarium.

Mischief - 11 Oct 2004 23:25 GMT
Mischief has gotten into "mischief" with the tv in my bedroom. It's a
small, old tv from the eighties that has the UFH/VHF knobs that sits
on the corner of my dresser. You attach a converter to the tv cable
and run it to the VCR and the TV works. Well, about a month ago,
Mischief likes to go from my bed to the dresser and stretch out on the
cool surface. Well a month ago she thought it would be cute to jump
on top of the VCR which sits on top of the TV and then disappear
behind it. Now I'm lying on my bed studying (yes with the TV on) when
suddenly I hear the scratchy sound of TV interference. I look up and
I have a 'snowstorm' on my screen. At that point Mischief jumps back
up and over the TV, looking totally innocent. I wiggle the
connections, I unplug the converter, but I could not get the TV to
work again. Litle brat!
So I went to the 99 cent store and bought another converter and it
works now. But again when it's on, she'll go back there and sniff.
I'll be doing something else and I hear the scratchy sound and come in
to yell at her just as she's coming back out with a "What did I do?"
look on her face.
Fortunately it's an old TV, if it was a new one, I would be so mad at
her.

Good story. Those old TV's are hard to kill. I have a 13" Emerson that
I got from Wal Mart back in 1985 on my dresser. That TV is still going
strong and has the best color picture of any TV that I have ever owned.
I keep wanting a bigger one but I could never find one with a picture
this good.

I just got a mental picture of a movie theater with a marquee with
"WHAT THE H*LL IS BEHIND THE BOOKCASE" in huge letters-- and a line of
kittycats around the corner. ;)

Same here - we have a 13" (also from WalMart) from 1983 that has a
unbelievably sharp and clear picture.
