Vino vs. The Ball

So I was out in the front yard the other day, trying to "weed" in
preparation for my rental inspection.  Found a kid's soccer ball way
deep inside a bush.  I pulled it out and put it on the side of the
road/driveway, thinking some kids from the neighbourhood might take it
if they lost it.
The real estate lady came for the inspection and since I know that it
was her who actually used to live in this house before us, I asked her
if they had left the ball behind.  She said no, so I left it out there
for another day and a bit.
This evening, I decided I might as well keep the ball and chucked it
over the fence into the back yard.  Vino was inside sleeping on the bed.
After Vino's dinner, he wanted out, as is usual now.  I opened the back
door and he raced out.  I was watching from the window and it was the
funniest thing I've ever seen!
He raced out full speed until he saw the ball in the middle of the lawn.
Suddenly, he puffed up real big, with a ridge on his back and his
tailfeathers all fluffed out like a giant bunny tail.  He pranced up to
the ball sideways until he got to within a couple of feet.  Then he
suddenly lost all his bravado and got into the "Creepin' Jesus" position
and carefully crept up to it.  He skulked around it, doing a 360 degree
inspection of the foreign object, sniffing it carefully.
Then he regained some courage and puffed up again, sidled up to the ball
and gave it a great big whack.  The ball rolled about a foot.
Vino hightailed it back inside and has been sleeping off the excitement
ever since.

What a brave boy he is! It takes a lot of courage to approach some unknown
that's that large.

LOL!! No soccer balls in Thailand, but all sorts of surprises awaiting
the unwary cat in Australia, eh?  What a brave fellow, Vino is. I'm
sure that soccer ball won't mess with HIM in a hurry!

That must have been hilarious to watch, and I'm sorry you didn't get
a video of it.

Maybe Vino has a future as a soccer star?

Dante really does.  It's really interesting to me what scares the snot
out of Dante and what doesn't.  Doorbells, the vacuum cleaner-- MOMMY!
Giant toys bigger than he is-- bring 'em on!!!

I dropped a napkin (serviette if you prefer) or paper towel or something
on the floor the other day, right in front of Jungle Jack, and boy, did
he split.  he seems to have a bit of a thing about them, as he's gotten
freaked out in the past when I've gone to wipe a small amount of goo
away from his eyes with a kleenex (meaning he was worried about them
before the first time I got to his face with one).  people?  dogs?  not
a problem!  paper tissue?  he's outta here!

then there's Jimmer, who freaks out at the sound of a plastic grocery
bag being crackled.  but at least that's fairly consistent with the rest
of his behaviour.

LOL! When Miranda was still young, I lived on the third floor of a
high-rise. As it happened, the flagpole of the building was right
outside my livingroom window, and it reached just up to my level, so
when the flag was raised, it swayed around seemingly in mid-air outside
my window. The first time the flag was raised after Miranda came to live
with me, she was absolutely terrified! For the longest time I couldn't
figure out why she absolutely refused to go into the livingroom, she
just cowered in the hallway. Finally I realised it was the flag she was
scared of! Maybe she thought it was some big bird of prey coming after her.

She did get used to the flag eventually, as she understood it wouldn't
be crashing through the window and sink its talons into her.

No, unfortunately I don't think so.  This morning I let him out after
his breakfast and he turned immediately right after going out the door,
hugging the side of the house all the way until he was around the corner
from the offending object.  I think I'm going to have to remove it if he
keeps being this way about it.  It's scaring him off from using a large
portion of the yard at this point!

Aw, poor Vino! The evil soccer ball. Maybe if he saw you handle it,
he might get the idea that it's not dangerous? I don't know, though -
that doesn't work for Licky. :)

Speaking of whom, one of Licky's nicknames is "Licky Beckham", because
of how he likes to bat a foam ball all over the house. Of course, that
ball is scaled down to *his* size, so it really is a soccer ball to him!
Maybe that's what Vino needs. Not a ball that's as big as he is!!

Well, I went out there and rolled it around a bit.  He seems less scared
of it now.  He's not avoiding it anymore but he's ignoring it.  Vino
usually doesn't play with balls anyway, even if they're a lot smaller.
I don't even know why I'm keeping this ball.  Just seems silly to get
rid of it.  I'll leave it in the corner of the yard and see what
happens.

Awww.  Kayla has offered to come teach Vino how to use a soccer ball.  She
ever "dribbles", passing the ball back and forth between her front feet.

And if all else fails she can teach Vino how to kill a soccer ball.  Or
basketball,  or exercise ball, or squeaky toy or just about anything that
has an outside that can be torn or punctured or stuffing the can be removed.
