Hear hear.  I'm sure by BIL has been very worried.  He worries anyway and
they have been away from home (in Florida) for a couple of weeks.  When he
gets home the grass will be green and the pool will be full.

According to my Netscape news blurb, they were expecting ten
inches!  (I suspect no-one NEEDS that much rain - not all in
one fell swoop, anyway!)

The local news said that the Savannah Georgia area got it a lot worse
than Florida did.  I dunno.  We're getting the end of the storm,
complete with tornado watches tonight and tomorrow morning.

I'm not that worried about us, but more worried about the cruising cats
and the Genesis.

Glad it turned out to be minor.  Purrs that the rest of the season is
equally so.

Living in NY, I can only share what I've heard from folks there.

* Everything outdoors needs to be tied to trees, picnic tables flipped
over, table surface down.

* If you plan to evacuate, leave really totally early. Try not to let
the PD herd you onto the freeways which crawl and stall. Bring plenty
of gasoline. Back roads at 35 or 45 MPH beat the hell out of freeway
at 1 MPH.

* Gasoline generators are very much stolen. Needs a chain, two dogs,
and a watchman with a BIG gun. Bring it indoors when possible, but
don't run it indoors cause of the monoxide.

Good luck, please let us know if there are other tips that Floridians
need to know. Humor: http://hcgtv.com/media/vocal/florida_plywood.jpg

Knowing Florida just a little bit as I do, I strongly suspect that generator
theft is a very high risk occupation during emergencies.  If the owner
doesn't shoot you, his neighbor's are liable to.  Besides it isn't the
generators that are so hard to come by so much as getting the fuel for them.

Which if I've got it figured right does squat to get the gas to the
generators, right?  Even if the bill did somehow actually provide the power.

Gotta love govmt solutions.

the generator would provide power to the gas station  the gas station
provides its own gas hence a gas station.

I was referring to the generators in folks homes and businesses.

When the roads are blocked its a little hard to get cars to the gas stations
to pick up gas, or tankers in to refill.

I thought pretty near all gas stations had back up generators just in their
own best interest.  I think when the station I had as a clients needed one
we figured it would pay for itself in about 36 hours.

No gas station has a back up generator anywhere in  my area.  That bill
GOV.. Bush sign into effect is giving grants and other money to have gas
centers generators.  All along the turnpike it is required that they do

After the first hurricane in 2004  To save my stores frozen and cold food. I
was forced to buy 3 full size military style generators.  OUCH on the
cost!!!  but they paid for themselves  when no one had cold milk or ice  any
where around.  Plus I HAD A/C in the stores.   The gas station had no power
I made a deal with them to buy their gas  hand pumping the gas was the big
pain in the a.s.  I did not have a long enough power cable to stretch that
far to give him a connection and was not about to pay for one.

I opened up the warehouse area when they were empties of supplies and let
the employees and their families come camp out where they had no power.  I
turned the ice machines to full blast  even got out of my dollar store got
the plastic ice trays and put them in the deep freeze.   Made plenty of the
shelter workers and rescue workers very happy to have cold drinks.  I have
permant generators now that are both propane and gasoline so no more hand
pumping  yeah  hopefully will not have to use them this year

The generators sound like they did some good. For you, and for others.

I was a volunteer fireman a while back, they made an extension cord
out of a roll of Romex. To do the same thing these days, I'd want to
use UF, which is ultraviolet resistant. Don't know how near the gas
station is. But, you never know. They may pay you handsomely for the
electric. When the word gets out, they will have a line of cars back
to who knows where, pumping the tank right down to nothing.

Thanks for the perspective. I've heard more about gen theft than gens
out of gas. But, have heard about both.
