I took his ashes home today.
Max is sleeping on one of his favorite bookshelves.
Cat of a lifetime.
But I'm not dead yet.

I know there are those of you who have won the trust and love of a
completely free cat.
I've heard from you.
Thanks

I'm glad he's back home.

The hurt will become less with time. With the passage of time, the happy
memories will come more easily.

The fact that Max came to trust you and love you is a powerful testament
to your character.

Hang in there. It does get better.

My character?
(chuckles)
Max's character makes me pale in comparison.

I always expected him to just not come home some day.
There are 12,000 acres of woods around our hill.
In half a decade I had to fish him out of a tree twice.

Brown Tabbies on an oak tree are invisible; The woods are oaks and juniper.

The Saturday before Max died he was pigging out on baby rabbits.
He could have swallowed a bone wrong.

Who knows?
I lost a wonderful border collie that way at the same age as Max thirty
years ago.
Senator John Jack Cheese loved me too.

Sade has a song "No ordinary love."

Anybody who thinks only humans have souls isn't paying attention.
Nite all

I agree.  They each have little souls.  Not little as in lesser, but
little as in cute and agile.  Max's life sounded like it was full of
fun, although ick about the baby rabbits.
Baha - 10 Jun 2006 19:30 GMT
I'm glad he's with you, at least that part of him that was born of our Mama
Earth. Surely Max's spirit shall be a guard and guiding star for you, even in
his "retirement."

Mr. Stevens, you're a poetic man. Max must have had a great appreciation of
the things in life that make for poetry, and must be part of the bond you
shared that I can feel as I read your posts.

Blessed be,
Baha

I'm glad you've got your boy home.

PB's ashes are sitting on the dresser waiting for.......I don't
know......the thought of scattering them is just too painful/final at
the moment. I want/need to keep him close for now and maybe for as
long as I live.

I found a couple of cats at the local shelter.
Pick 'em up Friday.
We shall see how they fare on Max's hill.

One's  a spay female, still a kitten, the other a neutered male, about 2-3
years old.

Think I'll name 'em Lily Litvak(she's already drawn blood) and Bill Lear.
(There are a couple of names to google.)
H. Adam Stevens - 13 Jun 2006 21:20 GMT
Lily

Russia's top female fighter ace in World War II was Lilya Litvak, The White
Rose of Stalingrad.

Bill

Lear, who had only an eighth-grade education, also held more than 150
patents. He is credited with inventing the car radio, the eight-track stereo
tape player and cartridges, the autopilot for jet aircraft, the navigational
radio, and the radio direction-finder for general aviation aircraft.

I'll report dutifully.
Max will be a hard act to follow.
In very important ways that was the closest relationship I've had with
another living being.
Never underestimate a cat.
Later and thanks for the purrs.

I lost my Frank last December. He had just turned 18, and he had been
with me since he was 5 months old. He was my little soulmate, and though
I dearly love my two youngsters, Miranda and Caliban, I don't think
either of them will ever be able to fill the hole that Frank left.

Bingo!
Something about cats, and Max was the penultimate for me.
So far.
Can it get better?

Eighteen.
What a blessing.
Lucille made 17.
I shall die with the memory of her patiently tolerating doll clothes and
strollers without complaint.

Named for BB King's guitar and Frank Zappa's song of the same name.
Lucille.

Lucille makes the short list.

Do you have a confession to make? :)

Confession?
No

Lucille's doll-clothes expert has gone on to graduate from college.

I was just joking.

OK, now I"m curious: what did the doll-clothes expert major in? :)

And may they live as poetic a life as you made for Max. Certainly he'll have
some big shoes to fill, but the new kids are siblings not replacements. I'm
glad you found new furbabies for your home and heart.

Blessed be,
Baha

A life I made for Max?
A life Max made for me.
A six-week-old kitten emerged from thousands of acres of woods filled with
predators and outwitted all odds for just the right amount of time.
Those eyes.

At the risk of being accused of religion I think God put off running the
universe to spend a few years sharing a hill with me.
That's what I think of that cat.

What do you mean, a *hill*?

I'm really glad you've adopted two new babies. Great names! Max
would be proud.

Hills are what's left after erosion.
Mountains result from uplift.

I'm sure Max is quite proud.

He loved to sit in the window and look across the pasture.
I'd whisper "Max": and the tiniest twitch of his tail said "I love you."

Oh, a wiseguy, eh? :)

No, I meant: what did you mean by "God took a few years off running
the universe to share a hill with me"? I was just wondering what hill
you were referring to.

He sounds like the most wonderful kitty!

Joyce, not really expecting to get a straight answer!

I own a hill in the country.
So it's my hill.
Actually it's Max's hill, too.
That was a straight answer.

OK! :) Thank you. I understood now. You and Max and God, together
on a hill on your property.

I'm the resident religious nut here, I think; and I think that, since he
couldn't be everywhere all the time, he must have put a little bit of Himself
in Max. I think God does it with all our cats. You make your lives for each
other, that's what makes the relationship so deep and special.

Well then I must be your opposite.
Actually I think it explains why the world went to hell since 2,000.
Max was giving me his undivided attention.
