They sound like cute names, but then you'll have 3 kitties nicknamed
"Siggy" :)

Ahah! A Wagner Fan wanting Walsung cats. =o)  I actually think it's
kind of neat. Although it's true, you might end up with three cats
nicknamed Siggy. Unless of course you call them Fried, Mund and Linde.

Ah, another thing I forgot.  You'll end up with cats addicted to
alliteration.  "Wehe, O Wa:lsung, Wehe!"  :O

I wouldn't worry unless you notice them pulling little swords out of
trees. Or howling "Waaaaaaaaalse!  Waaaaalse!" when they want to be
fed. =o)

At least they won't go "Weia, waga, woge du welle!"

Now, will they have aunts named Gerhilde, Rossweise, Schwertleite,
Waltraute, Ortlinde, Grimgerde, Siegrune, Helmwiege, and (last but not
least!) Brünnhilde?

You beat me to it!!   Those are the noisy Aunts, the ones who go
"Heia!  Heia!  Hojotoho!, Hojotoho!"

There are other Aunts, too.  There are Flosshilde, Wellgunde and
Woglinde (the ones who go "Weia, waga" and the Droopy Aunts, aka The
Norns.  ;)  who are, BTW, individually named Urd, Verdandi and Skuld
(although those names don't appear in Wagner's Ring).

I always thought Wotan would be a spendid name for a one-eyed cat.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Actually, it's what Siegmund and Sieglinde do afterwards that's
potentially worrying.  :P  Oh, well, if you make sure they're
neutered, I guess there's less chance of them bringing about the
Twilight of the Gods. ;)

Gee--

If one cast the Ring with cats--

Particularly large cats: Fafner and Fasolt!

Water-loving cats: Woglinde, Wellgunde, and Flosshilde.

Trickster who refuses to be confined: Loge.

The nagging cat: Fricka

The one-eyed cat who lords it over everyone and everything but forms bizarre
alliances with Loge: Wotan

The one who never appears except at moments of extreme duress, and then only
partially: Erda

The three who slink around together in the darkness: First Norn, Second
Norn, Third Norn.

Hmmm.... I'm having trouble thinking of the other characters as cats....

Let's see, a big mean cat could be Hagen.

An even nastier small cat who steals items could be Alberich.

A cat that got bullied by all the others would be Gunther

And if they were all picky eaters, you could call them the Ring of the
Nibblers.

Don't forget whiny, sneaky, complaining cat-- Mime. ;)

Why stick to the Ring?

Touchy Diva Cats: Isolde, Venus
Big Dumb Boycat: Tristan
Holier-than-thou Cats: Lohengrin, Parsifal, Elisabeth
Schizo Psycho Cat: Kundry
Wandering Cat: Flying Dutchman
Long Suffering Cat: Marke
Flirty Cat: Eva
Monomaniac Cat: Senta
Singing Cat: Walther
Fussy Cat: Beckmesser

I thought about mean cats, but didn't want to go there....
Don't forget Mime--he's the bullied one in Das Rheingold, and the wanna-be
evil one in Siegfried. Hmmm--even there, he comes across more as a whiner,
and is still subservient to Alberich. Wow--what messy feline dynamics!

And what an amazing thing--a cat thread tied (intelligently) to Wagner! Is
this an amazing newsgroup, or what!

Well, people have been finding new meanings in "Der Ring" ever since
its first performance - why not a cat angle.  I think I started
something interesting here.

Mostly.  After observing them for a few minutes, one is a possible
Siegfried: the brave one who knows no fear.  The other two are cowards
unworthy of such glorious names.  See my latest new message: 'Red

I always think of Siegfried as Anna Russell describes him: "Very young

Cute now but maybe not so cute in a year, right?

Hope you can talk yourself out of it, because for sure with names like that,
they will end up with nicknames.  Maybe nicknames you wouldn't have chosen.

Mundy, Fred, and Linda of course :P

I think they're cute names so why not go for it?

I will give those nicknames serious consideration.  I'm still
undecided, though since I am beginning to be able to identify them
individually, I'll need names in the next day to so.

Well, if they are as inbred as a lot of kits are, it's not exactly
inappropriate, but it might be confusing for the kitties.

Wagnerian names don't seem to have a really broad appeal. ;)  I love
Wagner, but I don't think I'd give one of my kits a Wagner name.  Just
too heavy and clunky for cats, IMO.

Depends upon which Wagnerian singers you've been listening to!

Those names are *heavy* with connotations.   In "Der Ring des
Nibelungen" (specifically, "Die Walküre", "Siegfried", and
"Götterdämmerung"), Siegmund and Sieglinde are sibling children of
Wotan - he is supposed to be the hero who will recover The Ring, but
isn't up to that standard.  She gets married off and the two don't see
each other until years later when he seeks sanctuary in her home -
then he and she run off and she gets knocked up by him just before he
gets killed.  Their son is Siegfried, who *is* the hero who doesn't
know the meaning of fear, is independent of Wotan, and who does
recover The Ring, and in the process gets trapped into some seriously
heavy tragic opera.

I guess I see now: cats deserve serious names, but not tragic ones.

But has no idea what it's for or what to do with it.    The real
recovery and return of the ring is completed by Bru:nnhilde, who
becomes the real free hero, after becoming temporarily thoroughly
befuddled  by love and revenge.

I was kind of glossing over the story to concentrate on the names.
After all, the story is the story of the world from the early days of
the Aesir gods to the end of the time of the gods and the time of man
- *huge* story.

Why?  I've had a lot of operatic cats.  There was Papageno
(Magic Flute) many years ago and later a Mimi and a
Brunehilde.  At present I have Melisande (Pelleas and ....)
and Cendrillon (Massenet's version of Cindrella)

That's a great name for a cat! Did he ever watch the birds from a
window sill while humming "Der Vogelfanger Bin Ich, ja" ? =o)

Actually, he was a bit of a coward (like the original).
More than once an angry bluejay sent him in the pet flap and
heading for the furthest corner under the bed.

At the moment, I'm favoring sticking to my original plan of giving
cats names of animal characters in web comic strips.  I'm thinking of
naming the brave one Ebenezer ("Two Lumps), the other male Atticus
(after Atticus Finch in "Catpaint"), and the female Solange (9
Chickweed Lane).  I sort of promised myself I would name the next
female Solange, but I had forgotten that in the heat of the moment.

Maybe you should name them Bruckner, Stravinsky and Charlotte Ives (in
case one of them sings in a different key than the others).
