I'm getting a colonoscopy next week, but what really worries me is the
day before, when I have to drink all sorts of nasty stuff to, I
assume, clear out my system.  Someone told me his wife actually called
the emergency room, worried that the pain she was feeling from all the
cramping couldn't be normal.

Eek.

Anyway, the procedure is Thursday morning.  I'm not really sure what I
want the results to be.  I don't want there to be anything seriously
wrong with me, but on the other hand then at least I'd have a name for
the problem and a known set of treatment options.

They gave me a med that seemed like a miracle for two weeks -- no
pain, no bloating.  But then the effect started tapering off.  I guess
my body got used to it already.

Now I've been given a prescription for Pamine, which appears to have
even scarier potential side effects.  The pharmacy has to order it, so
I won't get it till this evening.  But even if it works, do I want to
be on a medication that advertises "loss of interest in sex" and
"increased chance of sunburn"?  No, I don't.  And it seems to have all
the side effects of the other one, too.  And I found a letter from the
FDA online saying something about Pamine not having been proven to
work, etc.  Hrm.  Out of context, though, so I don't know whether that
was considered true or not.

All I know is, this sucks.

Purrs on the way.  Don't worry, I had it done and it's not that bad (I don't
know why people tell horror stories to people who are going to have the same
procedure they had - do they like causing all that unnecessary fear!!???)

Well, to be fair, the guy who said his wife had called the ER then
said, "But then, my wife doesn't handle pain well.  At all.  I'm sure
she could never get up from a fall off a bike and get right on the
bike again.  Whereas I know you could, so I'm sure you'll be fine."

Paraphrasing, of course.

A friend of mine had it done recently, and it's not that bad. She says
she needed to stay home from work during the cleaning-out bit, but they
give you really good drugs, so the procedure itself isn't bad. Or at
least, you don't remember it, and there's a very good reason they always
ensure that you have a ride home (rather than plans to drive yourself)
right afterwards, because the drugs that make you feel fine also make it
very difficult to focus on things like driving for a few hours.

Good luck.

Hugs and purrs, Monique.

Yes, the stuff is nasty, yes it cleans out your system, and yes, it can (but
not necessarily will) cause cramps.  By the next day when you go for the
colonoscopy, you'll feel like a limp dishrag.  However, once the procedure
is over, you will start feeling better.  Purrs that it will show something
that is easily and safely treatable, and that you don't have any side
effects from the medication.

It's especially scary because my bowels are already so touchy, getting
all bloated and/or painful at the slightest provocation (ie, eating
food, or then again not eating food).  So I can only imagine how angry
my colon will be at this invasion!

Will be sending lots of purrs. I hope the procedure isn't too uncomfortable
and they find the cause of your problem.

Hopefully, the doctors will find out the reason for your symptoms and it
will be something simple.  Purrs are on their way from my house for the
procedure.  I know it's scary.

It's hard for me to imagine it's cancer -- I mean, I'm 28, that seems
so young.  Easier for me to imagine an ulcer, I suppose, although I
don't really know what that would imply as far as treatment goes.

Realistically, it could be either, or I suppose something entirely
different.

I think I still have a fair amount of "I'm young, so I'm invincible"
going ... we'll see what the results are and how they affect that
attitude.

I guess you, of all people, would definitely know how scary it is.  I
take heart from your bravery.

Most people don't have that much discomfort.  I had one done last
year.  I was tired of drinking the solution by the time I got to the
last glass.  The pharmacist told me to avoid putting in the flavoring
tablets because the flavors weren't that good.  The unflavored product
didn't have much taste.  It was only slightly salty.  The procedure
itself is not uncomfortable.  It was interesting to see my innards on
the monitor in the examining room.

One thing is for certain: after you finish the solution you can tell
the next person who says you are full of it that he is wrong.

I wonder if I'm taking something else.  The instructions (I don't have
them in front of me right now) said something about buying several
things (all available over the counter) and taking them in a certain
order, but the main thing I remember is there was a lot of Gatorade
involved.  You mixed something in with the Gatorade.  I will need to
drink 24 fl oz of Gatorade in the afternoon over a 20 min window, and
then again early in the morning.

They also said to avoid red foods (presumably because they look like
blood?).  But while I'm on a clear liquids regime the whole previous
day, that apparently includes apple juice, which might just save me.

Apple juice is very high in fructose - a powerful laxative, if consumed in
"high" doses. When you eat an apple, you also get the cellulose and fibre to
bind things together. You donn't get that with apple juice. I find that
pineapple juice is even worse!

Well, given that the high point of the day is when I get to take
megadoses of OTC laxatives and prepare for, er, turbulance, I won't
worry too much about that effect ...

Hi Monique,

I've 2 colonoscopies done, the laxatives the day before didn't cause me alot of
cramping although I wouldn't wander too far from the john, it comes on fast. I
was surprised that I didn't get all the hungary on a liquid diet the day
before. The actual procedure is painless, I was allowed to go home one hour
after it was completed. I felt fine, went to lunch, shopping and the casino
after.

Purrs and hugs for good results.

Thanks.  They've warned me against working or driving that entire day.
I found out this will count as a sick day rather than a vacation day,
so I will be taking the whole day to recover.  I figure with all the
crap (no pun intended) I've been through, it's not a bad idea to take
it easy, anyway.

Usually this is just the nature of the light sedative they give to 'put you
out"

It lets you wake up quickly and has few side effects, except for some rather
inconvenient amnesia.   You are not likely to remember how you spend the
rest of the day and may show poor judgment in things you choose to do.

I decided on one of those days it would be a good idea to vacuum up the bird
seed on the lawn under the feeder with a shop vac.

Amused the neighbors and wrecked my back.

Charlie now has orders to not only hide my keys if he goes out, but to keep
an eye on what I'm up to.

When I had it done, they made such a huge deal out of it that I thought
I'd be out of it for the rest of the day. Shoot, I could have gone back
to work that afternoon!!  I was wide awake and furious at them for not
letting me go home and GET ON WITH MY LIFE, and I remember everything
I did that day.  I went shopping and everything.

Well, I was so knocked out by the sedative that I slept most of the
rest of the day, and still felt "off" the following day.  It probably
helped that I hadn't slept most of the night before, what with the
prep treatment.

Try not to look too hard at worst case.  No, drinking that stuff is no
picnic.  But never came close to putting me in the ER.  One of those
unpleasant "just do it" things in life.  Think about something else and
drink.

You're so right.  Anyway, it's not like I have a choice =)

Okay, I do, I suppose I could wuss out and not get the procedure done,
but then I wouldn't know if the procedure would have found something,
and that seems much worse to me.

The new medicine I'm on now is making me feel icky, kind of
light-headed, dizzy, slight vertigo.  Yuck.  I'm pretty sure that if
this continues, I'd rather have the bowel pain than this.  We shall
see.

Yes, the stuff they give you is nasty, and by far is the worst part of
the procedure (provided your doctor and tech people are good).  I
pretty much slept through my last colonoscopy.  Hope yours is clear

I'm not going to re-tell my story here.  So I hope yours goes
perfectly and easily, as the vast majority do.  The day before is the
worst.  You might want to pick up some baby wipes; they help.

Purring very loudly and continuously for you.  I had a colonoscopy in
Japan (of course) at a large hospital.  As everyone has said, the
procedure itself is not bad-- in fact they had the screen turned so I
could see my insides and I thought it was very interesting!  You can be
happy, though, that you aren't here where everything is done in a kind
of herd mentality.  (This is to make you laugh and be thankful for what
you've got.)

All the people to get a colonoscopy that day gathered at 8:00 in the
hospital, we got a short lecture, then were each given a huge pitcher
of stuff to drink.  Then we all were told "keep walking and it will
work faster".  So we all paced around and around the waiting room,
grinning at each other because we knew what everyone was doing!  One
older man helped us all out immensely by bringing rock candy (just huge
crystals of white sugar).  It was not so bad downing the liquid when we
had that in our mouths.  The good thing about the herd mentality is
that you can all encourage each other!

I had a problem of my blood pressure dropping suddenly at the very
beginning of drinking the liquid.  Got all shaky and faint.  However,
in about half an hour I was up and walking with everyone else.
Apparently that is not an uncommon reaction, so since you are doing
this at home don't be alarmed if you get all cold and shaky for a
while.  It will go away.

Praying that the results will help you get better.

Thank you, Cantate.  The image of bunches of people walking around,
waiting to feel the effcts, kept me entertained while I was going
through my own personal version.  I wish I'd remembered about the rock
candy.  I dunno, would anything mitigate that salty grossness?  Yech!
