Cats and More Cats

I have been filling in for another board member who is on vacation, and
so going to the shelter much more often than usual.
I have been really struck and dismayed by the influx of cats/kittens
this "kitten season."
Four years ago we started a free spay/neuter program with grant money
and earmarked donations via what we called the "Please Don't Litter"
campaign.
Last year kitten season was markedly light. We got all full of
ourselves, puffed out our chests with "Oh, look what a difference we
are making." But this year is the worst ever. I don't get it.
Maybe it's a cyclic thing?  Maybe the product of a light winter?  Maybe
our reputation is just growing and more people from outlying towns have
heard of us and are bringing them in.
The other thing is, the influx of kittens are not healthy. They seem to
be all sick with URIs and ringworm.
Just venting and thinking out loud. Thanks for listening.

Hi Sherry, here on central coast, Calif, the kitten season the last two
years has been insane. All the no-kill shelters have been full, not
accepting cats OR kittens.  (Of course, they DID manage to accept a whole
bunch of cats and dogs due to Katrina. That set up a storm of protest here
but did no good.)

Shirley,

Where on the central coast do you live?

I'm so very sorry to hear this.
Lots of purrs for the kittens and hugs for you, Sherry,
Polonca and Soncek
