A friend of mine, a comparative cat novice, is caring for two kitties
in their slaves' absence.  He called and asked me, "What is this
head-bumping thing they do?   They have food and water in their bowls,
and I cleaned their box.  So what do they want?"

I had to giggle, and was happy to reassure him.  "They want your
attention, James.  They're saying hello to you.  It's friendly
behavior."

He said "They're friendly???!"

I said, "You're getting headbutts?"

He said, "Yeah, headbutts."

I said, "That's friendly, pal.  Pet them."

He said (I swear) "I didn't know cats were *friendly*!  That's kinda
neat!"

He said "where should I pet them?"

I said. "Well, they're bumping their heads on you, so start there.
Scratch them gently between the ears.  They'll pretty much show tyou
where they like to be petted."

He said (I swear) "Wow-- is that PURRING?"

He (presumably) put the receiver up to one of the kitties, and indeed
I heard the vibes.  I said "Congratulations, pal."

Oooh, just wait.  I'm expecting another new catslave to emerge from
this experience. ;)

Sometimes otherwise "normal" people have no cat experience.  This was me
once.
Now look where I am ;-)  Sniffing catnip mousies and clearing up body pieces
brought in overnight to name but a few things I never did before.  There was
something nasty on the kitchen rug this morning, sort of a little heart and
green thing attached.
I guess BF caught whatever he chased in and out.

If you'd asked me five years ago if I would ever be doing these things,
including finding nicer and nicer (and more expensive) things for the cats
to eat, when what they have is perfectly good but refused, I'd have said you
were mad.

Now it's me that's mad.

Ah yes, that'd be a mousie gall-bladder/bile duct sort of thingie.

Over the border in Northwest Devon the locals call it the "bitter":
the one part experienced cats won't eat, although funnily enough they
will if mousie's still only a baby.

When Kensey (RB) was ion his prime I'd have several of those every
day.

Oh the joys of catcaring.........

Ah, so that's what it was. Mousie bits.  I'm so glad I'm not squeamish.
I like the idea that Boyfriend is becoming experienced, he's such a *baby*
boy still.  It doesn't seem five minutes since he was heaving his heart out
on the lawn, having caught and tried to eat a shrew.
All cats know shrews make you sick, or they learn it eventually, anyway..
I think that was his first and last one.
BF is aspiring to Kensey's standard.

I have pics of BF to send.

Hooray! Please do (at least, if you remember to attach them :-))

BTW did you ever get my reply to your mail with the cockerel - it left
me, at least.

LOL! How sweet! I wouldn't be surprised if he asked you next where he
can get one of those purr machines. Tell him to get two. ;o)

That's hilarious! Sounds like he believed the stories about cats
being "aloof and independent". It's so cute to hear about an adult
hearing purring for the first time. But what a deprived individual!
You need to invite him over to hang out with Stinky.

Reminds me of once when this rowdy kid who had a pit-bull, who was the
friend of my daughters *then* boyfriend came over to our house with
the kids one evening.  He said he didn't much care for cats.  It was
obvious he'd never spent any time around them, but seemed fascinated
with ours.  He couldn't believe each one had it's own name, and knew
it.  He says "but, how do they know their name?"  and my husband gave
him a rather incredulous look and asked him "how do you know yours?"

LOL.
I'm really glad I read this before I got up and got my glass of iced tea.
I kinda like my current keyboard.

What a great story. :-) It sounds like a new slave is being trained.
