Luna and Fez outside!!!!

We went for a walk down to Town Lake this afternoon. We left around 6pm
and came back at 8pm. As we always do, we verified all doors were
locked. When we arrived, Tom said, the back door is open! I said, what?
The patio door was open, so we rushed outside. Fez was on the patio and
he came back immediately. I told Tom to go get a head count and I rushed
outside calling kitties. Maya was in the enclosure looking out and I
heard Luna crying. I started calling her and she came running from way
back in the garden toward me. I grabbed her and brought her inside. By
then Tom had counted heads and we were complete. Phew!
Tom swears the patio door was locked (the bolt was sticking out) when he
saw the door open. How on earth did the door open if the bolt was
locked? How long was the door open? Who else went outside?
My heart is beating really, really fast, but I'm very thankful everybody
is accounted for. Luna is looking out the window with a lot of interest.
I'm afraid she's figured out how to open locked doors!!!!

That's better than the alternative, I guess. Glad everyone's OK and
accounted for!

I think I'd be more afraid that someone else learned how to open them
from the inside.  Perhaps you scared somebody off.

I'm glad they're all accounted for.  I sure know that feeling! A
couple of years ago I started a thread about Shamrock called
"Shamrock's big adventure" in which he had gotten out and I didn't
know it until I noticed he wasn't underfoot. Workers were in the
house and they didn't pull the storm door shut tight and he simply
pushed it open and got out. One of them yelled upstairs asking if I
had a black and white cat and that he wanted in.  YIKES. I still
remember how scared he made me that day.

Uh-oh, I think you're in trouble now. So glad nothing more serious
happened. Purring for your nerves, and hoping it was a one-off.

Glad everyone's ok, Victor.  I think what must have happened is that the
door wasn't closed properly before the bolt was locked, so the door was
actually locked "open".  Dennis did that to my parents front door the
last time we were home visiting.  We were sneaking in very late at night
and were trying to be quiet and not wake them up.  The next morning my
dad got up early and the front door was wide open, bolt sticking out.
It was not a good morning in the household :-(  Poor Dennis got
subjected to a lecture and a demonstration on how to lock the front door
properly.  Aaargh, it was a mistake, ok?!?  Sheesh!

Oh, brother! Did Dennis fall out of the "Circle of Trust"? :)

(You have to have seen a movie called "Meet the Parents" to get
that one.)

Heh.  Yeah, he's kind of out of it now.  At least he's not allowed to
lock the front door unsupervised anymore ;-)
The whole incident was just *so* my dad.  I can't explain it any other
way.  Oh well.  It's not like we spend a whole lot of time staying at
their house.

So glad to hear that everybody is accounted for.  Hoping there are no
similar shocks in the future.

Thank goodness the clowder is well and safe with everyone accounted
for! I'm guessing the "locked open" theory posted by Britta is the
correct one, and I hope so.  Much cheaper than changing all the locks
on your house.

Wow, what a scare that must have been!  Are you guys sure it wasn't a
break-in?  Purrs on the way to calm your nerves!

My wallet was still sitting on the breakfast bar, so I'm pretty certain
it wasn't a break-in. Furthermore, checking the alarm log online, I saw
the door was opened right about the time we left. It was open for two
hours!?!?!?!?!
From now on we're going to be paranoid about closing doors, trust me. :)

Perhaps it hadn't latched securely, and the wind blew it open?

I once got back to my car after a couple of hours in a shopping mall,
and found that I had left the keys stuck in the trunk lock.
