jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 06 Jun 2006 21:43 GMT So, as I said yesterday, I downloaded that cute photo of Smokey poking on the chair, with Kumani curled up beside him. It's on my desktop at work.
Today, someone in my office came by to ask me a question, saw the photo, and of course asked, "Are those your cats?" Um, no, not really. I'm just a cat fanatic who likes to look at pictures of cats who live with people I've never even met in person. :)
So we got to talking, and I told her I had 3 of my own, and she let me know that she wanted to get a cat, and did I have any advice for her. Oh yeeaaaahhh <cracks knuckles>, you came to the right place, my dear! :)
Apparently she's never had a cat before because she had no idea about a lot of things. For example, she thought a cat could jump from a balcony on one floor of a building to the balcony on the floor above it. (I'm sure, somewhere in the world, there's a cat that can do this, but I've never met one!) She also talked about declawing, but I reacted pretty strongly to that, which I *hope* made an impression. Then I directed her to the local Humane society, and offered to go with her to check the place out, see the cats, talk to the staff, etc. So we might do that. (Hey, your cats are even helping me socialize with my co-workers! :))
When I emailed her the link to the Humane Society, she asked if I would also email her the photo of Smokey and Kumani - so those two are really making the rounds!

Cats are just about the only thing I have to talk about with people at work, because all the others there are 'techies' and I'm not. I hope you find some good masters for your coworker.

badwilson - 07 Jun 2006 03:47 GMT Yay! That's awesome! I hope she gets a cat and I hope you made enough of an impression against declawing that she will never do it. Also, congrats on the socializing :-)

I'm glad my two were able to help you socialize. And, Smokey's going to be in that SMARTER THAN JACK book, so he really /is/ becoming a bit of a celebrity (not too shabby for a feral no-one wanted!)
People should not knock Internet friends...I've met up with people from Ohio to London, England, had some lovely tours, good food, fun times...

jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 07 Jun 2006 23:53 GMT BTW, the subject line for this post should have said "Ambassadors of Catslavehood". "Cat slavery" sounds like they're endorsing the enslavement of cats! We certainly can't have anyone thinking that.
> Conversely, if someone annoys you, you can put up the image of Nocturne > on your computer, and watch them cower in terror. :) Hee hee... I'll remember that. There is that unfriendly guy in the next office. :) Maybe I'll email him a picture of La Nox. :) Or, a three-fer: Nox, KFC, and Bandit!

> People should not knock Internet friends...I've met up with people from > Ohio to London, England, had some lovely tours, good food, fun times... Oh, I don't knock it at all. But a lot of people who aren't net junkies and/or cat fanatics like we are really don't get it. I mean, there are several layers of not getting it here:
(1) The fact that I have a picture of cats on my desktop. (2) The fact that the cats on my desktop aren't my cats. (3) The fact that I've never even met these cats, nor their persons!
But I was mostly joking anyway. The fact is, no matter what I do, my coworkers are going to think I'm a little weird. A picture of strange cats on my desktop is the least of it. And as I said before, the photo gives me a smile, so there!
And now it might have brought about a kitty adoption!

So I just say I'm looking at a pic of my friends' cats, which is true, and whether or not I ever met those friends face to face is irrelevant :)
> And now it might have brought about a kitty adoption! I think Smokey would be really really happy if he could understand that. I mean, all he ever wanted was a home. And now, just by being himself, maybe some other kitty will also get a home.

We certainly can't have anyone thinking that. Yeah, cuz that would go over really well. I can just picture it: Hoomin: Cat! Fetch me my slippers. And grab me a beer from the fridge while you're at it. Cat: <assumes cello position and licks butt>

I've known lots of cats who can use a combination of jumping and climbing to get pretty far. In high school, my bf's cats would routinely climb from the ground to the second story window.

I had a cat that would climb the rose trellis to the top of the garden shed, jump from the garden shed to the carport roof and walk across the carport to the roof of the house. When it got tired of strolling around the roof it would make the return trip, except it would not climb down the trellis, but jump straight from the roof of the garden shed to the ground. It wouldn't land lightly, either.

Both of ours consider the roof their private parade ground. But only Molly admits to knowing how to get back down. Jake insists on help, even though the plum tree he uses to get up has grown back in from its pruning. Anything happens to Charlie or the boys, he might be spending a lot of time up there.
