Max died Tuesday night.
The day following my divorce from a twenty year marriage,
I bought a 60 acre place nestled between a large cattle ranch and a larger
military reservation.
June 21, 2000, set the stage for me to meet the most glorious cat I have
ever known.
And I've known a lot of cats.
It was an August Sunday in 2000.
I glanced out my bedroom window and we made eye contact.
Obviously a great intellect was making eye contact with me.
Love at first sight.
He ran like hell, the kitten with those eyes.
I thought, "There goes a nice snack for a coyote."
Wrong
I spied him from time to time.
In the Spring of 2001 he would sometimes peek in the window, curious.
A bowl of Cat Chow would be eaten.
Eventually he'd let me watch him eat from inside the house.
One Saturday in May he let me watch him eat through an open door.
Then he came over, curious, a risk-taker, I scratched the back of his head,
he melted.
We shared our hill in Texas until an infection took him last Tuesday night.
I read somewhere that "You have never been loved until you have been loved
by a cat.", it's true.
The Cat and the Moon
The cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.

I'm so sorry! Too short a time, too cruel. It has been a sad day.

" It has been a sad day. "
No
It was more than half a decade of unbelieveable joy.
Max had to have his ears cleaned.
He would open the drawer and bring the q-tips.
If he wanted canned food he'd get it. I just had to open the can.
I bought a house in town and then sold it rather than take him from this
beautiful hill in the sticks.
He liked to sleep nestled in the crook of my arm, and if I moved too early
the claws came out.
When I was home, he was always a few feet away.
He was feral. He was free. We were surrounded by thousands of acres of woods
and fields.
I took him to the vet yearly, but there was always an open window.
I'm sure his freedom led to his demise, but he had the most glorious life.
Just glad there is this newsgroup so I can share.

I'm sorry the time you had together was so short but happy you had 5
years of loving Max and being loved in return.

PB, who I had to say goodbye to very suddenly a month ago, was always
with me when I was out in the garden...I miss his company so much.

PB was feral too and would never willingly stay in the house if the
door was shut....but he was the gentlest cat at the vets no matter
what was being done to him.

I am so very sorry.
I love that "You have never been loved until you have been loved
by a cat." It is so very true. It's tragic that our furred loved ones have
life spans so much shorter than our own. All we can do is offer them the
best possible life we can, and give them all the love we can. THey then
return that love many times over.
I'll light a candle tonight for Hiram's journey to the Bridge.

I am so very sorry for your loss. You wrote a lovely remembrance of him. I
loved the poem you quoted. As you can tell, rpca folk are very fond of our
"owners," being the catslaves that we are. I hope you will have the chance
to share more stories of Max with us.
I'm lighting a candle tonight for another kitty named Betty to accompany her
path to the Rainbow Bridge and I will include Max in our purrayers.

What a lovely tribute to an intelligent cat and a long, loving friendship. I'm
so sorry to hear about Max; you must have loved him deeply. I love the elegant
name. Hiram Percy Maxim sounds like a professor. I'd have like to have known
him. He'll surely be a sage up where the stars are, teaching baby cat-souls to
hunt toilet paper and chase butterflies before coming down to two-leg land.
Blessed be,

He sounds like a wonderful, wonderful cat. I'm so sorry for your loss,
but what a companion you had!
Today, June 3rd is the 18th anniversary of Adoption Day when I brought
home the eight week old kittens and the first cats I ever owned that
were not family cats--Isadora Duncat and Panther, both of whom have now
crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Pan just short of two months ago. I have
Nina and Francesca and thank heavens for their company, but Izzy and
Pan will never be forgotten. Isadora earned her name from the
tremendous, free-form balletic leaps she would make in pursuit of her
cat dancer toy. Panther earned his name through looking well.... like a
panther but in a convenient household size.
I hope they are now gossipping with Frank and Nikki while welcoming
Betty and Max to the Summerland.

Thanks
Reminds me of my wife's cat, Oliver.
Oliver lives at my wife's house in town.
Max lived at my place in the country.
I met Max before I met my wife.
(Actually I first met her in 1969, but that's for another newsgroup.)
I took Max in once. They met. The black, streetwise houshold-sized panther
and the smaller brown tabby with the piercing stare.
Oliver proceeded to tell Max exactly how he was to be dismembered.
Max merely turned sideways, arched his back, stuck his tail straight up, and
stuck out his tongue.
My wife, no fool she, grabbed Oliver and spirited him outside.
I never took Max to my wife's house again.

Actually Max's "come on a.shole" was amazing to watch.
Oliver would have lived about three seconds.
Maybe two.
This guy spent 6 years with packs of dogs, cougars, jaguarundies and
bobcats;
Packs of coyotes (I toasted one at 700 yerds), feral hogs and all the poor
critters left alone by their disgusting humans.
And he left me many pounds of gutted, headless rabbits.
The real value of cats:
1. No skunks.
2. Gutted rabbits.
Max
Proof there is a god.
I got six years of his undivided attention.
Rock on.
