A winter's tale

I mentioned in my post about Miranda's b*st*rd c*t trick that I looked
for her in the neighbour's garden when I though she might have slipped
out of the enclosure. This is the story of why I checked there. This is
happened back in January when I didn't feel much like posting. You all
warned me this might happen, and I meant to do something about it, but
never got around to it, lazy me.

Miranda loved being outside in the enclosure even during the winter,
when it was cold and snowy. I used to let her outside but closed the
door, because it was too cold to keep it open. I would check every few
minutes to see if she wanted to come back in.

One day, I had let her outside and then I went to eat my lunch. After I
had eaten, I suddenly remembered I hadn't checked on Miranda for a
while. I rushed to the door, expecting to see her sitting outside the
glass door looking reproachfully at me for leaving her outside so long.

She wasn't there. I opened the door and looked around. I couldn't see
her anywhere. It took me a long while to realise, but suddenly I took it
in: the door to the rest of the garden was open! The hook had been
unhooked and the door was open! I rushed out and saw little footprints
going off in the deep snow, and vanishing through a crack in the wall
into the neighbour's garden. '

I rushed back in to put on winter shoes and coat, then went outside to
see if I could track her. Imagine my relief when I saw her in the
neighbour's garden! I tried to convince her to jump on the wall so I
could grab her, and she talked to me and looked like she might jump, but
she hesitated. Finally I went back into my garden and called her over
the wall between our gardens. Like the good little girl she is, she came
immediately, and let me pick her up.

The following day, my BIL came and fastened a proper bolt on the door
from the enclosure. I think Miranda must have unhooked the hook when she
was climbing the netting as usual. Well, she can't open the bolt, not
even by mistake.

What a scare!!! I'm glad Miranda didn't stray far. We were pretty
paranoid about the door of our enclosure when we built it. It has a
bicycle chain looped several times around the door. Plus a bolt. :)
