Not doing well

glsummer@neptunelink.com - 29 May 2006 19:09 GMT
I haven't been reading or posting for a few days, as I have not been
doing well at all.

I was turned down by SSDI.  I lost yet another friend, who was the one
truly trying to make my life better, and was even going to help me
with getting my poetry published.  I got upset, he got angry, he left
my manuscript on my porch, he's gone.  DH is talking divorce.

I really can't take much more of this.

But, blanket purrs and congrats and hugs and whatever else is needed.
It's impossible to catch up individually right now.

Have you looked to yourself for the source of some of these problems,
or have you decided you are entirely blameless? There are always things
you can do.

SSDI is disability, right? Appeal appeal appeal... almost everyone
gets turned down on their first try, and a lot of people think that's
it, but you can keep trying and eventually they'll give in. You have
to be more stubborn than they are.

Gingerlyn, don't be despondent over the SSDI deal. Everyone gets turned
down the first time. *Especially* people who are as young as you are --
they don't want to pay out for so many years. Appeal it.

Sometimes bad things seem to happen to some people one after the other with
no nice things in between to balance it out a bit.  This happened to me, so
I understand a little of what you are feeling right now.  I got overwhelmed
and you sound like you're feeling this too.

Although it probably doesn't seem like it, try and remember  "this, too,
will pass."  It will, truly.
If you end up having to cope on your own, you will do.  When you feel
better, you will be able to make other friends.  Try and get out every day
and don't spend too much time on your own thinking about things.  Go
shopping.  You don't need to buy anything - just pretend you have a thousand
dollars to spend and *virtually* spend it.
If there's somewhere you can get to to watch birds and wildlife in a quiet
environment, go there and relax.

lots of hugs

This is nice advice.  I admit that I haven't tried watching birds or
shopping virtually to cheer myself up, but if I did it might work.  It
sounds like advice from someone who knows.

Many hugs, many purrs, both of them huge.

Please don't give up on this or anything. SSDI is indeed disability, and to
get turned down first time is routine from what I've seen. I think people
do have the right to call for a hearing and ask to be seen by a doctor who
specifically cases like yours. Long ago i got a back injury and had to go
to one of those doctors that work with Workmens' Comp to justify my
benefits, and I got them. I'm no legal pro though, and it may be to your
benefit to call one of those SSI lawyers who advertise all over the place.
If nothing else you'll come out of it with a free consult and some ideas of
how to fight back.

And never forget that we are here.

Blessed be,
Baha

To the best of my knowledge, all lawyers who specialize in Social Security
Disability appeals work for a percentage of the back payments.

And I don't know the percentages, but a lot of claims are turned down
initially.  Particularly if you are under 55.

Do get a recommendation from a professional you trust, whether it is another
lawyer or a friends lawyer or whatever, and find the one with the best
reputation in your area.  This is definitely one time you want experience on
your side.

I was approved on the first go round due to multiple problems, age and a
good work history, but if I had not been there is no way I would have tried
to handle the appeal myself.  And I dealt with govt bureaucracy for  a
living.  I can handle the IRS.  But no way want to play with SSDI.

I wish I could make it better for you, sweetie.  Maybe it's time to sit
back with a cup of chamomile tea and take a couple of deep breaths and a
break.  I'll be thinking kind thoughts for you and ask the owners to
purr for your peace of mind and for things to be much better.  Please

Thank you Pam, and thank you all for your kind thoughts and words.
You guys are wonderful and mean a lot to me.

I didn't even mention in my post that the new landlord is looking to
sell the building, too.  :-(

I finally e-mailed my Will information to my attorney yesterday, and
asked about talking to him about helping with the SSDI appeal.  That
seems to be all I can do right about now.

Maybe a break, some good chamomile or mint, and some deep breaths (as
much as I can take them, that is) is a good idea.  And pet a bunch of
kitties, of course.

Thank you all again.

I've been in and out lately - no time to read everything.
While you're sipping your herbal tea, ask your attorney
to refer you to a local one (if possible, local) who
*specializes* in SSDI. I have no personal experience,
but two friends (in wide-apart areas of USA, but not
near you) cut lotsa red tape, waiting, and time off their
applications/documentation. Think about it.
That might be a constructive move for you.

I have to agree.  It's almost essential, now-a-days, to have an attorney or
you just won't get SSDI (or wait years for it and wade through miles of red
tape).  A lot of attorneys will take it on a commission basis (they take a
percentage of your first lump-sum payment).
