Cat carriers

As a senior citizen, I decided it was time for a lightweight cat carrier for
those visits to TED.  The really good ones were out of reach of my budget,
but I found one in a mail order catalog and ordered it.  It is made of
fabric, similar to that used for baby blankets.  The problem is that it
doesn't hold its shape well.  My idea was to leave it open, in the hope that
the cats would go into it occasionally, making it easier to get them into it
when I need them there.  However, the top sags, and it doesn't look very
inviting.

Does anybody have experience with this type of carrier and/or any
suggestions about getting the carrier to hold its shape?

Going back in time.  We moved when I was 12.  My Mother put our two cats
in a "gunny sack" and carried them on a "street car" to our new home.
Later on when she had to take them to the Vet, she carried them in a
pillowcase.  MLB

I tried taking the bus to the vet with Rusty in his sturdy carrier.
The driver won't let me on the bus.
My only options are walking or taking a cab.
Rusty refused to walk in a harness.

I remember gunny sacks!  My Dad used to go deep sea fishing occasionally,
and he would usually bring home his catch in one.

I am also looking for a lightweight carrier to take Rusty to the vet.
It is only a 10 minute walk. But it is too heavy with the sturdy
carrier I have.
I saw some nice ones in cat-alog.com. Has anyone, especially Canadian cat
slave,
bought stuff from this site?

Persia has a Sherpa cat carrier; zips on the top and also down the front.
The weight isn't the carrier, it's the cat! LOL  She weighs 16 lbs!  When
John helped me bring the pets home last year from a drive to Huntsville,
Alabama he picked her up and went OOOF!  And we're talking about a 200 lb.
male, here :)  He said wow, she's heavy!  Yep, she is.  The carrier itself
is relatively light :)  It does sort of buckle in on itself when it's not
occupied.

Hmmm, spray starch maybe?  Iron on interfacing on the inside?  Or bend
some wire coat hangers and prop them up on the inside?

Thanks for the suggestions.  The wire coat hangers might work.
