OT: Purrs for neighbor

This morning EMS came to the house next door, where a lovely elderly
woman lives. Mary Ann is 94 years old and lives alone because she wants
to. She is truly an amazing woman. She takes a little walk every morning
and volunteers at a local hospital every week. She goes shopping by
herself and cooks her meals. She often bakes coffee cakes for the
neighbors, we've received many of those over the years. Did I mention
she's 94 years old?
Anyhow, I came out to see what was going on and a policeman said a
neighbor had called 911, but that Mary Ann was going to be ok. Not
wanting to intrude, I went back inside and continued with my day. I just
saw my neighbor across the street outside, so I approached to inquire
about Mary Ann. Turns out she lay on the floor for two days! Finally one
of the neighbors realized something was wrong and found her. I feel so
bad, we really should be checking on her every day. She's going to spend
the weekend at the hospital for observation. When she comes back, we'll
make it a point to check on her every day. We have plenty of caring
neighbors, so we can rotate this task so it's not a burden on anyone.
In the meantime, I know an older lady who would appreciate some healing
purrs.

Regards.

Very many healing purrs for Mary Ann.  I hope she hasn't broken her hip
(always a danger after a fall in this age group)

As many of you know, I've been through this with my mom, more than once and
this incident highlights my biggest fear for my mom's situation.  She
insists on living alone in her house, doesn't want to pay for help; she is
as mentally competent as she's ever been and you can find her name under
"stubborn" in the dictionary. Any help I've arranged for her she's let go.
I'm just very fortunate that my mom has neighbors and friends that check on
her, too, as I live 1500 miles away.

It's so worrying-- something like this happened to a cousin of mine.
So glad she has caring friends like you.

Purrs on the way for your lovely neighbor, Mary Ann

Thanks going to the neighbors who suspected something might be wrong
and checked up on her. It's so easy to get got up in our day to day
living and not notice when something may be wrong.

That's scary! Living alone can be wonderful, but when you need help
and don't have anyone around, it can be terrifying and dangerous. She's
lucky to have alert and concerned neighbors. I'm glad you all will be
helping out in the future, and I also hope she doesn't feel intruded
upon. (fter this experience, maybe she'll understand that a daily
check-in doesn't have to be intrusive, just sensible!

Also, I wonder if she's thought about getting one of those medic-alert
buttons you wear around your neck? At 94, she deserves one!!

Purrs for her and the rest of your 'hood,
Joyce

Awww. I'm glad she will be OK. My neighbor Dottie, who just turned 90 is the
same way. Very active, but just two days ago had to go into the hospital. I
do not know what is wrong but purrs going out to all the elderly in need.

Many purrs and prayers for a valiant lady. And thank you, Victor, and
your neighbors, for caring for this lady. A daily watch, not just once
a day, but different times in the day, can help keep Mary Ann out of a
nursing home. Her heart and soul are in her own home. She would wither
away if her family decided she was unsafe at her home. I have seen
that happen so many times in my job.

Purrs for Mary Ann.  She sounds like a lovely lady - and she's just two
years older than my Mom.

I'll get my kids going on that, and throw in some prayers of my own.

Maybe you could talk her into getting one of those alert pendants that
would let her call for help???

I just saw those! The one I saw costs $30 per month, which I'm sure she
can afford. If not, we'll be glad to chip in. I'll order some brochures
for her. Thanks for the suggestion!
