purrs for Joy

Cantate - 25 May 2006 01:41 GMT Joy, our dog (friend of all cats) flew the coop this morning. Jona walked out; I hadn't yet got the leash on Joy and she followed. It being lovely weather, she enthusiastically bounded off. I raced after her but she was soon out of sight. She does this every once in a while-- gets all happy, runs, then gets lost!
Purr that our big furry friend will come home soon, or that some good helper finds and calls the phone numbers on her tag (my home and cell phones).
Last time she did this, when she realized she was lost she ran straight in the door of another house that had cats. Guess it smelled like home.
Thanks, Cantate, Jona, Cherry, Emma, Chibi, and Romeo
Bianca L - 25 May 2006 01:55 GMT Please go to your local shelter and fill out a lost pet report! Make sure to go down there and look for yourself. If you haven't done this already. I hope your friend comes home safe.

Lost dogs go to the police station. I'm going to do that now.
She has a collar with two phone numbers, the address and my last name. So far it hasn't failed-- most people who are brave enough to talk to a strange dog are also very responsible animal people.
Out I go, having finished teaching morning classes!

Cantate - 25 May 2006 04:06 GMT That was the fastest purr reply in history! She's back.
I walked out of my classroom at 10:30, replied to Bianca, walked into the hall to sign out to go look for her, and the secretary came running up. All she said was, "O-taku no inu..." (Your dog...)
I said, "Wow, you know about my dog?" (My work number isn't on her collar.)
She said, "Nishiyama-san has her. He said he knew you were in class so he will keep her till you can come and get her." Nishiyama-san is the man who does car repair for all the teachers here (international school). His workplace is across the park (where I usually walk Joy) and she turned up there once before. (Next time I'll go there first-- and the police box is right down the street.)
Anyway, the secretary of the car repair place had seen her, said, "Hey, I know that dog", grabbed her and tied her up, looked at her collar, and called the school! They didn't want to disturb my teaching by calling my cell phone. Her theory is that the two (male) Dalmations next door were the attraction. (Yes she is spayed. Whew.)
She's back, and I stayed home with her for an hour to make sure she knew I was there-- now am back at work. Thanks for all affectionate purrs!

Tish Silberbauer - 25 May 2006 04:28 GMT Is "inu" Japanese for dog? My father's dog, an Akita, is called Shima-inu.
Cheers, Tish

If you use the other pronunciation for the character that came from Chinese, it's "ken". (Your Akita's breed is Akita-ken).
Shima-inu is Island Dog? Striped Dog? Could be several things!
"Wan wan" (woof woof) to your dad's dog. "Nyau nyau" to your cats (you can probably figure that one out without translation!)

Tish Silberbauer - 29 May 2006 09:10 GMT I finally remembered to ask my father why they called the dog "Shima". He says it was for "Islands" - partially because Akita come from the northern islands and partly because of the dark, island-like markings on her coat.

I had a friend who named their dog "Kumo" for "clouds" because he was a cloudy color. Unfortunately "Kumo" can also mean "spider", and there was never a less spider-like dog than fuzzy furball Kumo, but in my mind I always saw a skinny black spider!
Joy's name is easy to explain to Japanese people because they have transliterated the word "enjoy" so I say she "enjoys" life. Unfortunately most people hear Joy as a boy's name so they call her "Joy-kun" (kun being the male ending for children and animals) rather than "Joy-chan" (chan works for girls and any small child or pet).
