I also am connected through BellSouth's DSL service (although I read
and post to this newsgroup through news.individual.net), and they have
been having problems with their RADIUS server, used to validate
individual logins. I read a couple of binaries newsgroups through
their news server, and my news program generally has several
unsuccessful attempts before it succeeds in logging in. In the
unsuccessful attempts, you get the initial "This is server xyz"
message, but it doesn't prompt you to log in, and the connection times
out. At a guess, when your ISP's mail server attempts to connect to
BellSouth's mail server, a similar timeout is probably happening. The
problem has been going on for five or six weeks now.

Thanks very much for this information, John. I guess I'll just have to wait
a while to reply to Jill then.

Not a problem; I didn't think you were ignoring me :)
