Marina, Get Well Soon Purrs are on the way. If you can find any lemons, bake one briefly (about 20 or so minutes and 350. F), cut the warm lemon in half and squeeze out the pulp, add honey to your taste, and spoon it down. Good cure for a cough, if of course, therapeutic fresh Mouse doesn't do the trick. Melissa

If its anythign like the cold doing the rounds here, its an evil one. Knocked me out for over a week, gave me a horrific cough and whats worse, sucked all my energy.
My sympathies, Marina.
Gargle with salt for the throat and keeping the germs to the minimum (if you can do that snorting thing of drinking stuff and making it come back through your nose, even better - its *great* for a cold, honest), honey & lemon drinks to cut the phlegm, keep your fluids up, get lots of rest, and enjoy the purrs. Wasabi is also good at clearing sinuses :-)
Hope you are feeling better soon,
Yowie

Must be the same thing. It started with a terrible sore throat for 24 hours, then the horrific cough started.

Now, if I added a little shot of brandy...

After all, most commercial cough preparations contain >alcohol - some quite a bit. 16 or 17 years ago, I caught a low-grade bacterial pneumonia. On the one hand, I never got sick enough to have to stay in bed. On the other hand, the crud stayed around for two months before the doctor found an antibiotic which would get rid of it. During the last month or so, I was on a prescription cough medicine, consisting mostly of alcohol and codeine. It had an extremely bitter flavor which would linger for 10 minutes or more after you took the medicine.
At one point, the vice president of the company I was working for came to my office to talk about something. He examined the ingredient list, and said, jokingly, "Now, John! You know the company rules about using narcotics and alcohol on the job!"

Sounds like Elixir of terpin hydrate with codeine - which if I remember correctly is 80 proof, and does in fact taste terrible. I wonder if the bad taste is done on purpose.
I remember as a newby Army pharmacy tech, back in the mid 70s, we used to make our own hand lotion. The stuff was flying off the shelves, so the boss told me to double the amount of rose oil in the recipe. That seemed to do the trick, because the smell really lingered when you used the lotion.

disclaimer: I am in no way associated with the following product - don't work for them, don't own the company.

This stuff is *amazing* - probably not on drugstore shelves in Finland though :-( We regularly stop cold and flu in their tracks - Fred spends lots of time travelling on airplanes and getting messed up with lack of sleep and he *never* gets colds anymore. Clinical studies show it reduces incidence of cold and flu by 89%. Great stuff. We love it since the kids pick up all kinds of things at school at their age and then bring the bugs home to us.
Don't know why I am posting this really - just wish everyone could try it and feel better I guess.
Take care,

I tried the doc's prescription cough syrup, which tasted awful and didn't help, and am now following a regime of hot drinks with honey and lemon, as recommended by Yowie and Melissa. We do have something similar called Coldrex here, though I have no idea if it's anything like Cold-fx -- I couldn't find a list of ingredients for Cold-fx.

Ingredients of Cold-fx, fyi: a.. 1.. What are the ingredients in COLD-fX? 2.. COLD-fX is an extract from North American Ginseng, due to our scientific patent called ChemBioPrint we remove all chemicals that can cause interactions and as a result the active ingredients are safe and the same in each and every capsule. a.. The ingredients are an isolated compound of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides which are targeted specifically to the immune system. Dake care !

I hate to say it, but "a" is essentially gibberish in any immunochemical context I can conceive.
As far as 2, I would be fascinated what would be left if you took away all chemicals that could cause interactions. Even the "inert gas" xenon can act as an anesthetic.

Even the "inert gas" xenon > can act as an anesthetic. The thing is that it really does work. I've tried Echinacea to no avail but this is amazing stuff. If you look at the website, you see that there have been clinical trials (and yes, I'm aware how studies can be biased) and that NHL teams and olympic athletes swear by it. We were referred to the product by a couple of surgeon friends and I can't tell you the number of times it has saved me from a cold. Sorry I have no scientific/medical background to shed more light on the mechanics of it though.

Sounds like marketing babble about how "chemicals" and "natural" is good, without mentioning that *everything* is made of chemicals.
