Hey everyone,
You are probably wondering what happened to me. Well since i lost my
job at the vet clinic in March, I've been just hanging around, playing
World of Warcraft and working on my cross stitching.
And every now and then going on interviews. And i'm finally happy to
say that I finally found a job!
It's in a small, very crowded clinic, that will be moving to a larger
clinic next month. They have an RVT on staff and they are willing to
help me finish my school requirements, (which is good since i'm
supposed to graduate next month and I was getting worried) This place
is going to pay me a lot more than the last place i worked at, so
that's a great plus for me.
I'm also going to be a relief vet tech for an emergency vet clinic.
They didn't have any openings, but I still would like to work in
emergency so I agreed to be a relief technician. If the staff is short
someone and they can't get someone to fill a shift, I'm on a list and
they'll call me.
On the subject of school, I have 90% of my stupid list of requirements
done, but the remaining activites are not often done in everyday vet
medicine. For example, I have to help place an orogastric tube.
Orogastric tubing is for flushing out the stomach when an animal has
swallowed something poisonous. While i was at the other clinic, I can
honestly say that animals came in for poisonings only once in a while,
and we didn't do it. And my professor still expects me to get it done.
What am i supposed to do? Hope that a dog swallows some snail bait?
Sheesh! I have to do 2 PCV/TP (a blood test) a week, but how can i do
it if we always send our blood out? She still expects me to do it!
I'm so sick of the administration which expects me to complete
everything on this blasted list, and I have this feeling that not
everything is going to get done. It's graded on a point system and my
professor says she'll evaluate the whole big picture and then give me a
grade. I can still walk at the graduation ceremony, but if i don't
complete the class, i won't get my diploma.
Sooooo, all i can do is do as much as I can and complete what i can,
and turn it in and hopefully i'll get a C or better so i can pass the
stupid class. if I pass, i'll still graduate. And i'm not the only
one that's feeling the heat over this class too.
But at least now, I have a job, and can work on getting this semester
overwith. Not to mention finally making some money too. :)
Take care,
Kristi

sounds great, Kristi. Hope you are able to do the procedures you have to to
graduate, and if not, hope they consider what you've done anyway and let you
graduate. Good luck!

Congrats on the job! And purrs that you get to complete your degree. I
still say it can't be right if they change the requirements in the
middle of the year.

Can you ask someone at the vet clinic to help you do it on a euthanized
cat? Often euthed cats are used to teach procedures.
Good luck in your new job - sounds fun!

That's a good idea - I wonder if they'd go for that?
I have to say that I misread the line "Often euthed cats are used to
teach procedures," and thought you were saying that euthanized cats were
accustomed to teaching procedures! :) I think my reading skills must be
slipping, or maybe I'm just not getting enough sleep.

First good luck with the new job Kristi! Good luck with getting the
classes completed.
I have to say though, that if someone used my euthanaised pet cat to
teach procedures without my permission, and I found out, I'd be bloody
pissed off. You're treading a whole difficult minefield there - so if
you do go down that route be very careful.

Yeah, in this day and age i doubt euthed pets would be used to teach
unless we had permission from the owner in writing. It would make more
sense in a school atmosphere. For my large animal class, we had a
woman who euthanized her horse, donate its body so that we could do a
necropsy on it.
In a clinic atmosphere we don't touch that. People are so lawsuit
happy, i wouldn't want to even go there.
Not a bad idea, but not ideal for this day and age. :P
I'll jsut do the best that I can and hope that it will be enough.

Well if euthed cats are used to teach procedures, it's only if
permission had been obtained in writing from the owner. I have never
worked on a euthed cat, and honestly i wouldn't be too keen on working
on an animal that was someone's pet.
It's a tricky idea, but it's not a bad idea, but i don't think the
clinic's would go for it. It would make more sense in a school
atmosphere, but not in a clinic.
My professor expects me to get everything done, so i'm just going to do
what i can and hope that it will be enough.
