My company is merging with another company and I'm doing the web site for
the "new" company.  I've never done a web site for this type of company
before (we sell, lease, repair, transport, and rent storage space for
shipping containers - the kinds you see on ships and the "bed" part of
16-wheelers), so I'm a bit lost as to getting the "look and feel" right.
Also, this is a more male-dominated industry so, although I would like
everyone's opinion, I especially need a guy's point of view.

Please, *please* be very honest in your opinions - I'm a web architect and I
do this all the time, so I don't get emotionally involved with my designs.
If a customer tell me "that looks like crap" I just scrap the design and
start over without ever a hurt feeling.

Here's the site:  http://www.cgini.com/

Thanks in advance!

OK, my boss just said, "those trucks you have on the menu are *not*
container chassis trucks, they're regular semis."  !!!????!  He must know
what he's talking about, he knew the difference at a glance, but I have *NO*
idea what he means - and I can't find any pictures of a "container chassis"
truck!!!  *SIGH*

Let me start by saying that I'm not a semi driver, but I think what
he's getting at may be two things that, now that you mention it, I
notice.  First, there are the airflow thingies above the cab.  Those
are  the rounded things on top designed to push the air up over the
regular high box of a tall enclosed trailer.  Container trucks don't
need them as much since the containers are not as high.  If you were
strictly into container hauling, you wouldn't need them.

Second is the cab space of the semi behind the drivers compartment.
That is where the sleeping quarters of an over-the-road driver would
be.  Most container traffic is short-haul, the containers being
transported by ship or rail for long distances.

As a personal note, if it were me, I think now would be the time to
check with him to be sure that those are the changes he was thinking
of.  My second choice would be to scour the clip-art files for
shorter- cabbed, un-spoilered semis and then show them to him.

Hope this helps,
O J

I talked to our sales guy and he's going to get one of the drivers to hook
up a container to a truck and then take a digital picture of it for me so I
can get the correct profile!  Sheesh!  ;>

Goodness, does that mean I can go back to breathing again?  When I saw
you needed help right away, I didn't stop till I had the message in
some kind of shape I thought you could use. (pant, pant)  Well, maybe
it'll be for the best. Is there any chance the company logo on the
semi will be big enough to read?

OK, let me go look at the rest of the site.  Talk at you later.

CatNipped,

In case the digital picture doesn't turn out well, or you want to play
with ideas before you get the pictures, you can check out
http://www.bunne.com/Trucks/MB20D.html for pictures of model Volvo
container trucks.  Lots of different companies and styles to steal .....
 errm use as ideas.

Hawaii and they left the container for several days and just picked it up
Friday.  COuld have provided a picture.

Do they have to be trucks?
Could they be on barges or a train?
Or some other vehicle that moves containers?

Well, the trucks have the most recognizable silhouette, but I may scrap the
idea all together since the internal site will have a lot more pages the
trucks just may be to big to fit them all.  I was so busy today doing admin
work that I'm wondering when I'll find the time to get back to doing the
site!

Who will make up the viewers of the site, i.e., the general public, people
who are familiar with containers, cat lovers, etc.?

It will be for people who buy, rent, store (these mostly), etc. storage
containers.  As I mentioned, this is still a very male-oriented industry
(though women are making some headway - 3 out of our 30 depot managers are
women).

Sorry about this.

Lots of words but very little substance

e.g.

[New company name] formed on 1st September 2004, from Global Intermodal
Systems (GIS) and Container Care International (CCI).

[New company name] has 30 facilities and offices located throughout the
United States, Mexico and Costa Rica, .......

Always use the New company name and use it lots.

Oops, forgot to say, this is just the graphics / layout design - I put the
merger blurb on the front page just as "filler".

Looks good, although the "flashing" trucks annoyed me a bit. If they have to
flash, can they stop flashing once I put my mouse over the truck I want to
click? Its kinda disconcerting that you don't know whether you've selected
it or not....

Other than that, looks clean and proffesional. I'll let you know how it
loads on crappy dial-up tonight.

Thanks Yowie - yeah, I'm tending to agree with you about the trucks
flashing.

Not a male point of  view, but Wow! The home page looks great.
I love the little truck convoy for the tabs, or whatever you call them.
I was looking forward to seeing the other pages, but I guess they are not
ready yet.

CatNipped,  I'm a computer programmer (been programmer and sys admin
since the '70s) who can't find a programming job. I'm therefore earning
my keep by driving a semi.

I pull only standard dry vans, but when I make deliveries to or pickups
from rail yards I see a lot of trucks that pull containers ("cans" in
the lingo) on can chassis. Lots of the trucks pulling them are
conventional road tractors. The owner-operator trucks have low-top
sleepers more often than not (as opposed to the taller condo sleepers),
and a fair number of them are driving cab-overs ("cab over engine"
(COE), the ones with blunt noses) with low-top sleepers. A good number
of the company-operated trucks are day cabs - no sleeper at all. Could
it be that the guy complaining about the menu artwork means that he
wants to see trucks with low-top sleepers, or cab-over trucks, or day
cabs? If all else fails, you could always ask him whether he wants to
see low-top conventionals (conventional in this case means "long nose"),
cab-overs, or day cabs.

As for the look of the site, I like it.

I'm a web architect working as an administrative assistant!  And then they
make one of my "duties" designing their web site.  But what are you gonna
do - here are no tech jobs out there any more!!

Oh wow, all that went so far over my head it didn't even muss my hair on the
way past!!  ;>  I really should get to know more about the business of the
company I work for!!!!

Hi CatNipped,

Again - I'm not a guy, but I'm a graphic designer and just wanted to
add, I like the clean look and choice of colours, it looks very good.
Just for the record, I use a Mac and tried it in IE and Safari and it
was great in both. Is the Rubik's cube meant to link to anything? I saw
its changing pictures, and my cursor changed as if to indicate a link,
but clicking produced no results?

Oops!  Fixed that - no, it wasn't supposed to link to anything, it was just
pointing to the JavaScript that ran the mouse-over.

Thanks for pointing that out to me, it would have slipped past.

Maybe there's something wrong with my computer, but I can't see anything in
the middle part of any of the pages except the index page (which loads
*very* slowly, BTW). I've tried viewing it with IE 6 and with Firefox. Same
result with both.

You could try emptying the temporary internet files cache, and degramenting
the hard drive. Sounds like it's a bit chocca.  See what happens after that.

Oh, sorry I didn't make myself clear enough - this is only the "framework"
that up (just the graphics and page layouts).  I'm trying to design the
graphics and layouts first and then when that's settled on I'll start adding
the content.

Thanks for letting me know about the slow download - I'm using a T1 line at
work and have a cable modem at home, so I need feedback from people who are
using phoneline modems (as will a lot of our customers be using).

Thanks,

CatNipped
