Persia's nickname is the rumblebug. She purrs so loudly some times I can't
hear myself think. When she's sleeping she purrs gently but if she wants
food she sounds like a boat moter. What's really funny is when she yawns
while she's purring. Then she sounds like she's saying "roar". It's cute
:)

I think I've mentioned this before here at RPCA, but Emily purrs at the
wrong time - when the vet is using his stethoscope to check her
heartbeat! And it's not a fear purr - she really enjoys all the
attention she gets during her yearly checkups.

Oh, to answer your question in the header - Emily has a VERY loud purr,
the vet tells me!

Licky's purr is pretty loud. It starts with a low rumble, and when he
really gets going, it's a good, strong motor. It's one of the things
that made me fall for him.
Roxy is a little quieter, but still audible through the air. But she
purrs only when she is coming to me for cuddles. That's how I can tell
she wants serious attention, and isn't just passing by and stopping
for a quick head rub. If I go up to her and give her some unsolicited
pets, she never purrs in response, even if she likes it.
Smudge purrs if I just look at her! She purrs if I speak to her, she
purrs when I feed her, she purrs when she sleeps next to me. And her purr
is almost silent. I sometimes call her "Whispertone". (Which is the name
for my v*c**m cl**ner. Ha - the beasts would disagree, and so do I!)
Lately Smudge has taken to sleeping under the covers with me, and this
morning I woke up to find her lying down near my feet, perpendicular to
my legs, with her head hooked over my ankle. So her throat was resting
directly on my ankle, and I could feel her purring!

Hi Jill,
Silver purrs moderately loud, say a medium rumble, Tessie purrs
slightly louder say mid to moderate Rumble and Scouttie well she just
moves the furniture (EARTHQUAKE) purrs. When Scout is sitting on our
dresser and I pet her she rumbles loudly enough to make the WHOLE
dresser rumble.

Both my boyz are loud. When I'm on the phone, they always hang
around-- that's another posting-- and Stinky often climbs all over me
while I'm talking-- and the person on the other end can hear him.
Dante is not only loud, but he does it ALL THE TIME. I've never met a
cat who purrs as much as Dante. I don't think I've *ever* touched
him, and found him not purring, from the day he came home. And the
purr was what got me. ;) I took him out of his cage, and he cuddled
right up next to my ear, and
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
It was amazing. I said, "Oooh, I like you!"
He is usually too busy these days to do much cuddling, but that purr
is always whrrrrrrrring away. ;)

Brandy is the undisputed purr machine in the house. She sounds like an outboard
motor! Once she was on my lap in the living room; my husband was taking a bath,
and I figure we were maybe fifteen feet from each other. And he said with
disbelief, "Is that Brandy I'm hearing?!"
Stosh, for all his alpha-cat rowdiness, is surprisingly quiet in matters of
purr. His purring is reserved for his "pick-ups," as our boy loves to get a hug
when one of us comes home, and he'll stick his head under mine or Louie's chin
and purr quite happily, and quite quietly.
Roxie and Odessa are almost impossible to detect. Odessa is probably the
quietest purr-motor in the house, but you can feel it in her belly of all
places. Roxie is a close second to her. You have to feel her throat many times,
though sometimes she has this bizarre purr-noise that I can only describe as
nasal. The vet tells me not to be concerned, it's just her way. But all I can
think of is The Nanny Starring Roxie, and she's a-cuddle with the boss, and
purring a nasal "Mis-ter SHEF-field" in that nasal way that is uniquely Fran
Drescher.
Blessed be,
Baha, who has way to much time on her hands while on disability

About the only time I can hear Amber purr is when she comes on the bed
about 5 AM. That's about the only time she purrs and it is very soft.
Tiger, for all his size has a very soft purr. When he purrs, he
breathes (and purrs) at double time. Sometimes, the only way I can tell
he is purring is by watching the frequency of his breathing.

The bitties are very loud and will purr if you so much as look at them.
It's a great surround-sound effect when you have one on the bed on
each side of you.
Smokey's purr sounds like a rude phone call. It's quiet and gaspy.
His squints are a much more reliable indicator of his happiness because
his purrbox is rusty if not broken.
Nox's purrs aren't very loud, but feel awesome through the pillow or
against the back of your head or your lap. My friend is awed when I
put my ear on her back to hear if she's purring. He doesn't want his
face that close to her fangs.

I've always wanted a loud purrer, but the only one who is loud is Pine
Cone, and only if we abandon him with just a house sitter for a while.
The rest purr a lot, but you practically have to find out by feel,
rather than by ear.

Cesca has a rather dainty purr, one that is more felt than heard when
she's feeling moderate pleasure. When she's in a state of advanced
bliss, her purr is quite a lot louder, and she drools like the waters
of Babylon. Nina's purr is definitely audible, but nothing out of the
ordinary for a talented cat. She's my lap fungus, though, so she can
purr as loud or a soft as she wants.

Laku has a soft purr, but still audible when you're close to him. Nico
purrs like a power drill, and can be clearly heard from a distance. DH's
mom always thought Laku didn't purr at all until she happened to hear
him purr while DH Janne was carrying him. Well, she's a bit hard of
hearing already, age 71.

I have to put my ear on Spicey's purr. But the other day I could actually
hear her purr.

Rumble is loud that when he was a little kitten palm size when I rescued him
after I chased the person down that threw out of the car ( and well that is
a long story ). From 20 feet away he was so loud the responding officer said
listen to that little one rumble
I woke up a couple night about 3 am ago thinking a car was in the driveway
and it was him in the corner of the bookcase the echo from him was so loud
he sounded like a car idling

It may be a long story, but it's a worthy one. I'm glad to hear about
someone taking action against one of those b------s who deserve not
only everyone's contempt (which they already have), but swift kicks in
the jeans and hopefully, fines and/or imprisonment for such
unbelievably cruel and heartless deeds. Two of our three cats were
abandoned, and we know of many more whose fate was less fortunate. Good
on you, Matthew.

Thaat sounds like Cleo! She is definitely the loudest purrer of our bunch.
When she curls up on Nancy's pillow on turns on the purr-motor I can hear
her from out in the hallway.
Amelia likes to climb up on my chest as soon as I lie down and purrs right
in my face, though not nearly as loud as Cleo does. What I really like is
when Amelia is getting really relaxed and sighes while she purrs. It
sounds so very cute!
Tabitha and Sammy both very soft purrs.
Harri and Ranger can both have pretty noticeable purrs when they want to.
They only purr when they are being snuggle kitties. But when they decide
to snuggle they'll climb up into my arms and flop down with tummy in the
air, and as soon as I start to pet soft kitty tummy I get treated to the
most wonderous purring.

Oscar's vary, from barely audible to LOUD. When she's really into it,
she also drools like crazy. When she's ready to jump off my lap,
there's a huge wet spot on my pant leg.
