OMG, I'm finally online!

Hi Everyone!
Just a really short note to say that I'm finally online again!  I've
been here for over 3 weeks and signed up for my phone line and internet
right away, but it took until yesterday for it all to be done.  I think
it's because we're living in such a small town 3 hours from Purrth.
Anyway, our container of stuff arrived yesterday (also finally!) and I
was up till midnight unpacking and organizing.  I got around to the
computer this morning and my broadband was up and running!  Woo hoo!
Poor Vino's still in jail, he's got 6 days left to go.  I was able to
visit him about 6 or 7 times in the first 2 weeks, which was good.  His
first week was not good because they kept moving him from one enclosure
to another due to there being a shortage of spaces.  One lady wasn't
able to pick up her cats until 4 days later due to a family emergency.
Once Vino got into his real enclosure he settled in quite well.
Although I fail to understand his extreme fear of those 45 degree ramps!
He can only get to the 2nd level because they put a chair in there for
him.  He can't get to the high level under the roof at all.  Weirdo.
It's not the feel of the metal on his paws because he will rest his
front paws on it no problem.  I think it's either the angle of the ramp,
or the fact that it's quite narrow and he thinks he won't fit.
I'm sure Helen Wheels posted about our visit to the quarantine place.
I'm so glad she was able to take a day off work and come with me.  Their
visiting hours are extremely inconvenient, STRICTLY  1:30-3:30, Mon-Fri,
no holidays and no exceptions :-(
Fortunately the girls who work there all love Vino and give him cuddles
every day.  And I made friends with a British family who recently moved
here too and they look in on Vino every time they visit their 2 cats.
I can't wait till he gets out!  It's really weird not having him around
all the time.  I keep seeing movements out of the corner of my eye and
think it's him.  And I'm still in the habit of creeping in the front
door waving my purse to keep Vino from escaping!
I also just want to say a great big huge *thank you* to Helen Wheels for
her hospitality and company.  It's lonely moving to a new country all by
yourself and not even having your kitty around for company.  But thanks
to Helen and her crew of friendly cats, I felt a lot better about it.  I
will have to write an anecdote one time about Helen's morning and
night-time feeding ritual and the circling of the sharks ;-)
Ok, I really gotta go because I've got a million things to unpack and
organize.  There are 8364 messages unread, so I'll never catch up.  I
really missed this group, I hope everyone's doing well.  Hugs and purrs
to everyone :-)

Nice to hear from you, Britta.  I'm glad Vino has good company "on the
inside" so to speak, but I'm sure he'll be delighted to get out "on
parole". =o)  And I'm sure he'll be ecstatic to be with you full time,
again, even though I'm sure he'll find his new home looks, smells and
sounds strange.  No matter, once you have him back, Australia's bound
to feel more homelike, since no house can be a true home without a cat
in it.

Hey Britta, welcome back to RPCA! Hope your move went well and that
you'll be settled in soon. Only 6 days to go until the Tailless Wonder
can come home! And what about Dennis?

I know what you mean about seeing movement out of the corner of your
eye and thinking it's Vino. That happened to me when I had to have my
21-year-old cat put down. Fortunately you don't have such a sad reason
for it. But when you've had a cat in your life for years, it's hard to
get out of the habit of looking for them, and even seeing them when
they're not there.

8000+ messages??! Wow! I'm definitely one of the guilty ones there. :)
Don't feel bad about skimming over them - you will never have time to
read them all.

I'll bet you're happy to finally be in OZ!

Dennis is home the day after Vino.  Thursday.  Lucky guy didn't miss out
on a single day with Vino, it's like he was never in quarantine for him!

Well, I realized that from March 17 to April 10 I was reading the NG on
Dennis' laptop while we were in Malaysia.  So when I went back on my own
computer and marked all those ones read, it worked out to only 3700 new
ones.  I am now down to 3400 so am slowly making a dent in it.  But it's
taking a while because I'm still unpacking and organizing for most of
the day.

> I'll bet you're happy to finally be in OZ!

Yes, very happy.  5 years in Thailand was quite enough, even though I
liked it.  One thing I'm really loving here is how you can understand
everything people are saying.  I'm finding myself becoming quite an
eavesdropper on other people's conversations.  I know it's rude but I
just can't help myself!
Everyone here has been extremely helpful and friendly, it's really been
great.

Thanks everyone for your kind messages :-)
I think I am finally nearing the end of unpacking.  It's been a lot of
work but fun too.  Kind of like Xmas, seeing all our stuff again.  I
hope Dennis likes how I've set the house up.  I hope Dennis likes the
house, he hasn't even seen it!
I've really been enjoying sleeping in my own bed again and not shivering
like crazy all night long.  Sleeping on an air mattress for 3 weeks
hasn't been much fun at all!  It gets down to about 8 degrees at night
here and after 5 years in Thailand that's absolutely freezing to me.
Wouldn't have thought anything of it if I'd come straight from Canada.
Hopefully it won't take me too long to adjust.  At least it's nice out
in the day, low 20's.  I find I have so much more energy now than I used
to.  The constant heat in Thailand really drained me.
I'm going to take a bunch of pictures and put them up on Webshots, will
post the link when I'm done.  Family and friends are very keen to see
the new homestead as well.  I've just been so busy running around
getting everything organized.  At night my feet hurt even when I'm
sitting down!
I was going to drive up to Perth on Tuesday afternoon and get a quick
visit in with Vino before picking him up on Wednesday morning.  But now
I've started taking this class on how to talk to people about wine.
It's supposed to help me get a job.  It's every Tuesday evening for 7
weeks.  So I'll be driving up very early on Wednesday instead to get
Vino.  Dennis is coming the day after, Thursday.  He has to take the bus
down because I don't want to leave Vino alone on only his 2nd day home.
I'm going to have to set up a temporary litterbox for Vino because we
didn't bring his old one from Thailand with us.  Dennis bought him a
brand new fancy litterbox in West Palm Beach but there was no room in my
luggage and so he took it to work in Burma with him.  I'm sure Vino can
do with a rubbermaid bin for 1 day though.  Poor bugger has had to put
up with sawdust instead of litter in quarantine.  Didn't seem to mind it
much though.
We brought over a big roll of sisal rope to make Vino a new cat tree
with.  But this house we're renting has this big log pole that goes
right up to the open ceiling.  It's in the middle of the house.  I'm
thinking I could wrap that with some sisal rope for the bottom few feet!
I'll see what Dennis has to say about the situation.

I've tried sleeping on an air mattress a few times, and I've also
found it oddly cold.  You don't build up any heat at all underneath
you, sort of like being in a hammock.  I'm looking forward to your
getting kitty and hubby back. :)

Yes, that's the thing about air mattresses.  There is no insulation
underneath you.  I guess I should have invested in a thermarest instead,
but they are so small!  I ended up buying a 50% down 50% wool comforter
for above me and putting my sleeping bag and another polar fleece
blanket underneath me.  That made it marginally bearable but 3 weeks was
plenty long for that sort of sleeping arrangement!  I'm really loving
having my bed back now, the last 4 nights have been bliss :-)
