Update on Rusty

Well, I just got back from the vet. The ringworm on Rusty's ears are gone.
But he got ringworm on his paws and his behind.
I left him at the vet for a bath. Figure they do a better job than I do.
I came home to wash the floors with bleach. Will go back to pick him up
in a little bit.

The vet suggested shaving Rusty but I don't like the idea. He has to be
sedated
for the shaving. Maybe if we can't rid of the ringworm by the next recheck,
I will
have him shaved.
I probably will take him back for another recheck in another month or 2.
By then it will be summer and he doesn't need his fur as much.

The vet said his upset tummy is probably from licking whatever residue,
whether
from the shampoo or the bleach. So I have to make sure I rinse him well.
Now I still have to regularly bath his paws and behind instead of just his
ears.

Today I tried to take him on the bus in order to save on cab fare. But the
bus
driver won't let me get on the bus even when Rusty is in a sturdy plastic
carrier.
I ended up walking him to the vet in the carrier. It was only a 10 min walk.
But Rusty in the carrier are heavy. I should buy a light weight gym bag like
carrier.
I tired wheeling him in the heavy carrier with the thing you use to wheel
luggage.
But Rusty pooped in his carrier to show his dislike as it was probably too
bumpy a ride for
his feline highness. Wish he will walk on a leash.

Thanks for all the purrs. Hope we can get rid of all the ringworm soon.

I found out the vet tech's cat had gone to the Rainbow Bridge. He had
pancreatic cancer.
He was about a year older than Rusty. The vet's cat Chico is doing fine
after eye surgery.
He likes Rusty and used to meow to Rusty. But Rusty ignored him.
These day Chico, who is a white Himmy had became quite fluffy and is much
less talkative.

I'm so sorry to hear about the vet tech's cat.
Lots and lots of purrs and best wishes for Rusty's recheck to be
negative. Thank you so much for taking such good care of him, Winnie,
Polonca and Soncek

Ugh!  I'm so sorry he has it on new places now.  Purrs for you and
him.

All they need to do is shave around the lesions.  They do not need to
shave the entire cat.  topical treatments are ineffective - baths can
exascerbate the problem, especially in long-haired cats as the skin
stays moist.

Ask your vet about Program for eradicating ringworm - or buy it
yourself OTC and dose him.  It works.  From an old post of mine:

*************paste***

"Let me preface this post with the fact that I am not a vet...

BUT, if your cat has ringworm, and is otherwise healthy, you may be
able to save yourself the $80 I just spent by foregoing a visit to the
vet and treating your cat with Program. It is an off-label use, but
one that my vet (feline specialist) recommended.

Peewee was prescribed Program at 44mg/lb
of body weight - one dose, followed by another dose 3 weeks to one
month later,
as insurance."

The 44mg/lb is standard dosage for ringworm.  This is a higher dosage
than the regular dosage for flea prevention.

The chewable tablets should be compounded into tuna or another favorite
treat and  fed when the kittens are hungry.

After the double dosage at 44mg/lb, then treat the kittens with the
usual dosage of Program for cats on a monthly basis as preventative.  I
have found that a monthly dose for 6 months will prevent further
occurances.  Be aware though that some cats seem to be carriers and
will reinfect themselves periodically over their lifespan - for these
cats Program should be part of their monthly routine.

Program works because it is a chitin inhibitor and thus, it stops the
growth of the fungus.  You can treat topically with Lotrimin gel (2 to
3 times daily) at the same time, but in order to effectively do so the
area needs to be shaved first, and the cats need to be kept from
licking off the gel. (Not easy.)

Give the Program a shot and see if you see improvement.  I started to
see hair regrowth within a week to two weeks after treatment.

Program is safe for use at 14 weeks (kittens), and can be purchased
online from a
number of sites or by calling at 1 (800) pet-meds.

***end paste

BTW, I was a groomer and vet tech at a high-volume feline specialty
clinic and IMO, and IME, Program is the only *effective* way to get rid
of ringworm once and for all.  Good luck!
