Took Francis to see the good vet yesterday morning. I had a look at the blood test results, his levels are *horrible* - up to almost 500% over normal range. The vet gave Francis a steroid injection, plus I've got pills to give him as one a day and he's got the low-protein food for renal patients.
Even today, the morning after the steroid injection, Francis has perked up noticeably. Don't know how long I'll have him, but however long or short it is, he'll be loved
Cheers, helen s

We are purring that the meds will keep him going for a long time yet. Scritches to the darling boy.

Scritches to the darling boy. Thanks Marina. For me, what is important is that as much as I want him around forever, the important thing is that whatever time he has left it is time where he has a good quality of life. I don't want to doom him to living years if he is miserable, just for my own benefit. Neither do I want to kill him off now, as per attitude of first vet I saw. I shall be putting Francis first in this, and I will be reminding myself of this regularly.

Sometimes, when Nikki has an asthma attack and is coughing horribly, I wonder how she feels about it, but as long as it's only a few minutes per day, and she is alright 23 hours and 58 minutes of the day, I think her quality of life is good. If it goes down to 50/50 or worse, I'll have to rethink, of course. Her breathing does sound terrible at times, but she seems a very happy and contented cat (much more so than when she was younger), so it doesn't seem to bother her as much as it bothers me.

I know that you will be a loving, responsible, care giver to a boy who has given you so much love and laughter. May Bastet guide you in your decisions and give you the strength to do what's right.
Now, let's hear some funny Francis stories.

Thanks OJ.
Francis has to come first, and I will have that in my mind in his daily care.
>Now, let's hear some funny Francis stories. Well, he did give me The Feline Look Of Death, when I presented him with a bowl of the special renal diet food. It was a distinct, "You expect me to eat this s**t?" So I mixed some 'nip in it, as Francis normally loves 'nip. I presented him with the food in a new bowl. I got the "Look, I may be ill, but I'm not senile. I know, you stupid human, that this is the same food. Do your really think I'd be fooled by a bit of 'nip and a replacement bowl?"
Marble said he had no problem "Eating this s**t." and promptly scarfed it down.
So, as I see no point in having Francis starve to death, I opened a tin of highly expensive premium cat food which I had carefully studied the protein conent of, and he had a few bites of that, and then gave me the "Okay, so I've tried it, but I don't want any of that s**t either." look, and walked away. At which point Marble walked over and said, "I don't mind eating this s**t" and scarfed it down.
So I'm putting little bits in a syringe, and squeezing *just a little* into Francis's mouth regularly, and he's eating that way - he licks it up and swallows it, not spitting it out.
I think the little horror is sniggering at me as he curls up in a patch of sun.
Cheers, helen s

So it's fair to say that you're renaming Marble "Hoover"?

Going to a caring vet has made you feel so much better. Otherwise, I don't think you could have written such a funny story. It is good to know Francis will be loved and pampered for the rest of his days by a humorous Meowmie. And humor does make the bad stuff more bearable. Purrs and prayers,

I believe you said he is eating, which is a good sign.
Skeeter wasn't eating, and while I knew I could probably keep her going for another month or so with the infusions, it was obvious that it would have been for my sake, not for hers. I know you'll be strong enough to make the decision when the time comes, and nobody else can tell you when that time is.

I knew when it came for my beloved girl, her appetite was gone, I was trying to feed her, she was getting thinner and thinner. One day, I was using the toothpaste type food, rubbing it on the roof of her mouth to get her to take it. She cried out, it seemed for me not to do it any more, and that's when I knew it was time. I could hardly bear it to do it, but I did. You will know too. May it be a long way away.

It's because they are great-- so individually charming of course, but also if there's anything we understand , it's how much you can love a cat. You know how these mishaps are like a body blow to your fellow catslave.

MaryL - 08 Oct 2004 01:28 GMT >>> We're still purring up a storm for Francis to have many more happy >>> years. [quoted text clipped - 17 lines] > > Cheers, helen s Helen,
I have had CRF cats in the past. If these numbers are correct, I am really surprised - and very concerned - that your vet has not either hospitalized Francis for fluid therapy and instructed you in how to administer it at home. I was able to extend the life of one of my cats for a surprisingly long time, and she had a very *good* life during that time. When diagnosed, she was not expected to live for more than 6 months. Instead, we got 3 very good years. I did work carefully through this with the help of my vet, and I want to encourage you to do the same thing. Francis is probably not eating because the toxins have built up so much in his blood stream that he really feels sick. This is one reason for the fluid therapy - it will help to flush some of the toxins out of his bloodstream. If his numbers are critically high, sub-Q fluids are not enough and you would need to do IV fluid therapy for a couple of days because that will work quickly to flush the toxins out. From time to time, I have read posts on the newsgroups from people whose cats had crashed (and it sounds like that is what is happening with yours), and they achieved very good life-extending results from hospitalizing their cats for fluid therapy.
I'm puzzled as to why your vet did not recommend any kind of fluid therapy. I urge you to check out this web site and read up on the procedure: www.felinecrf.org. Please talk to your vet about this ASAP. Fluids could save your cat's life!
