Perfect Patio Weather!

After the nasty storms blew through here on the evening of Tuesday, 4/25,
the temps dropped about 30 degrees.  Wednesday it was only about 60F and
downright chilly.  Yesterday it got up to about 75F.  Today, it's expected
to be about 79F and there is virtually no humidity.  It's nicely sunny and
cool!

This is a perfect day to sit on the patio.  Me on my swing; Persia in her
Kitty Walk :)

And yes, I got the RoundUp to kill that freakin' monkey grass.  A bottle of
the concentrate which claims it will, when mixed, kill up to 3000 sq. ft. of
weeds.  Problem is, the bottle didn't say I'd need a special sprayer.  You
only find that out when you open the little attached plastic-covered booklet
thing.  I don't have a sprayer.  Sheesh.  This is getting expensive.

I'm starting to think I should just forget eradicating it and buy a weed
wacker and trim it all back and forget about it :)

Either return what you got and just buy a spray bottle of the already mixed
Roundup, or use any old spray bottle you might have around.

Enjoy the weather.  Sounds like heaven.

DH has at times used the need-to-mix stuff at full strength instead of
mixing it, in order to kill stubborn weeds!  Not monkey grass but crab grass
invading the flower garden - he used a hand sprayer and a shield to keep it
off the flowers.  Kept the stuff gone all year, but it's creeping back this
year!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.  I'm currently taking a break from mulch-spreading
and weed pulling.

Persia in the sunshine - I bet she loves it!  I also bet that she's as
gorgeous as Weeble thinks she is, too!  Just make sure she has a bit of
shade to retreat to in case she gets too hot.  When ours sit in the front
bedroom window in the mornings, they have a tendency to get baked (I call
that window the Kitty-Bake Oven), and hop off for a few minutes to lay on
the cool hardwood floor in the shade for a bit.  Unfortunately, that also
means that the seat is vacated - for another cat to claim!

Hey, I'm a good Meowmie!  She has a kitty cabana cover with a little hammock
at the end of her Kitty Walk.

They *do* get hot in the sun.  But they also seem to seek out those rays of
golden light... at least until they are medium-well done ;)  I love petting
Persia when she's on the windowsill by the back patio in the late afternoon
and her fur is hot.  She looks at me and says, "Mrrow?" and I say, "Yes,
baby kitty, it's nice, isn't it?  Mama loves Persia!"

I'm obviously all googly-moogly over this gorgeous velvet green-eyes grey
girl.  It's hard to tell from her photos; her eyes usually look gold in
inside light.  But they are really green.  Then again, they change colours,
too; sometimes more green, sometimes more gold.

It's strange petting Snoopy when she's been in the sun, her black patches
get almost too hot to touch yet the white remains cool.

That sort of makes sense, if you think about it.  Dark clothing attracts
heat so why not fur?  However studies have shown if you wear dark clothes in
the heat of a desert sun you stay cooler than if you wear white.  Weird,
huh?

Isn't it that the dark stuff "holds" the heat on its surface,
preventing it from passing through, whereas the lighter colors allow
the heat through, thereby staying cool themselves?

You got the first part right, dark colors do absorb heat.  But lighter
colors reflect heat rather than letting it pass through.

I knew I didn't have it quite right.  Bah!  Thanks for the
clarification.

I would have said that dark colours heat up more, and thereby allow for
quicker evaporation of any sweat. But on the whole, I can't see how dark
colours woul dkeep you cooler on a stinking hot day.

I think it's important to have *loose* dark clothes, not tight ...

I hadn't really considered that when we got Kayla.  She's a border collie
and we did choose a smaller pup with shorter fur because our summers are so
hot.  She is mostly white as well and now I'm thinking that will be a good
thing.

The cats had their first "sprawl on the cool tile floor in the dark entry
way" session yesterday.  Its amazing how much they can sprawl out when they
want to cool off.

My dog Puma was a black lab mix.  He used to "handle" the hot Virginia
summers by digging out the ivy in the back yard so that he could rest
in the cool dirt.

Dad was not amused.  Puma didn't care and spent most of the summer with
orange dirt streaks on his fur.

I'm really keeping a close eye out for digging.  Once a dog starts,
especially when they learn its a good way to stay cool, it can be very hard
to get them to stop.

We had most of our floors replaced last year.  Mostly tile and some wood
laminate.  I sure wish we had gone with all tile.  It stays much cleaner and
is much cooler than the "wood".  Not to mention it looks better when it
isn't sparkling clean than the "wood" does.
