Our Response 28/04/2006 02:23 PM
Dear Lois
Thank you for your email.
I can confirm the message below is from Xtra. We have decided that
from Wednesday 3 May 2006 the Usenet server will be closed down.
As per the below email If you'd like to continue using newsgroups,
there are other services available such as gignews.com, or free services
such as MSN Forums and Google Groups.
If you require any more help with this issue please feel free to
reply.
Kind regards

Thanks for finding this out for sure, Lois. I have just found I cannot
post on freenews.netfront.net but read the posts only. So unless I can find
another suitable news server that might be the end of my posting!!!

Dump Xtra and find an ISP that will provide the service you want. And make
sure you tell them why you are dumping them! At least, find a cheaper ISP if
they arne't going to provide newsgroups to you any more.
news.individual.net are really good, and well worth my AUS$17 per year. I
use them over my ISP's newsfeed because they seem faster, have better
propgoation, better spam reduction, and I can access them at work. Although
my ISP's newsfeed can be used as a backup (and to access binaries) at a
pinch.

A free server that allows posting is nntp.aioe.org it may not be as good as
news.individual.net but it's free. A server which carries some binaries ie.
alt.binaries.pictures.animals is dp-news.maxwell.syr.edu it's another free
one though it doesn't allow posting.

Thanks Adrian,
I did try aioe.cjb.net but only got a handful of newsgroups, will try it
again using your link as I am probably doing something wrong.
I want a server that lets me post so am probably going to go to another
server as Yowie suggested. Thanks.

I use
http://www.talkaboutpets.com/group/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes/
as a back up. The good thing is that I can access it from any computer, so I
use it if I am away from home.
It is much better organised than Google.
It is free, you can post from it, you just have to register if you want to
post.

I tried to install dp-news. but it wasn't successful for some reason, but I
was able to install news.syr.edu (who claimed to carry
alt.binaries.pictures.animals)
My first download consisted of Re: posts, all text. Disappointing, but
today I can see the photos. Retention seems to be about 48 hours, not ideal
but there isn't a choice. I'm glad to see abpa again.
They also carry rpca and all the other groups I read so it's a back up to
NIN and a first read for binaries.

Regarding abpa, don't forget Usenet Replayer at
http://www.usenet-replayer.com/groups/index.html
They seem to have most (all) binary groups in Usenet, but it's a
read-only thingie.

Thanks Yowie. I am seriously thinking of dumping Xtra, it does involve me
in the hassle of sorting out broadband etc. but they have a monopoly in New
Zealand. The government have been dithering about whether to unbundle
thereby letting our other servers into the game. The sooner the better I
think. The trouble is the other servers are at a big disadvantage to Xtra.
I think their dumping of the newsgroups is lousy and probably sufficient
reason to dump them!!!! And I don't believe their reason for dumping, that
hardly anyone is using them. Lois is trying to work out her options also,
being an Xtra customer.

The Google Groups interface sucks. It is still in Beta testing and they
keep tweaking with it. I use individual.net for this ng because they were
so *very* responsive when we had that awful spate of trolls a while back.
However, for other newsgroups I use my local phone company which is also my
ISP because I like access to binary groups.

Thanks Jill, I'll look at individual net. I don't mind paying for a
server but am paying heaps for broadband on Xtra at the moment and feel
their dumping of newsgroups is a mean move!

At less than $20 New Zealand Dollars per _year_ I doubt you'd get a more
reliable and spam less service anywhere than News Individual, several people
on this group use it.

Huh. My ISP did the same thing to me recently. I use news.individual.net
for my news server now, there is a small yearly fee which works out at
around 7 English pounds, maybe you could sign up for this. The only
downside is you cannot get binaries. They are great at blocking spam and
abusive posts and the retention is good.

One free server I've found that carries a few binaries from
alt.binaries.pictures.animals is dp-news.maxwell.syr.edu they don't catch
all post though, I could see replies to Jill's post of Persia but not the
pictures. Other pictures I could see so I'll keep it as a backup.

Many ISP's are dumping usenet. They say it's because nobody uses it, but I
think it's just for cost cutting and legal (pirating) reasons.
When none of the big ISPs carry usenet, then only small outfits will be left;
There is no big money behind it. Then the small companies will be sued out of
business and the record companies and software companies will have one less
hassle to deal with.
If you want a bulletin board, you will need to go to a page with ads.
The writing is on the wall.
