For the last few days I've been going out to Shadow (visitor cat) and
sitting with him for a while, I still haven't attempted to touch him. Today,
for the first time, he fell asleep while I was near him so the first sound
I've ever heard from him is, snoring. <g>

That's really good.  He must trust you otherwise he wouldn't sleep while you
were anywhere near him.  Great progress.
Reminds me of gaining Boyfie's confidence, open the back door and he was
gone in a flash.
It does work eventually but can take a long time,  very worth it in the end.
Good luck.
