Cats & Music - your stories?

Some of my "cats & music" stories -- what are yours? What specific
music does your cat like or dislike?
____________

Years ago my wife & I had a great funny Siamese "Chim-Chim" (RB) who
was a classical fan, as most cats are. When we put on any classical
music, CC would find a good spot midway between the stereo speakers
and sit listening, eyes closed in contemplation and ears moving with
each passage.

My good pal brought over some Elvis LPs (from the fat Elvis LasVegas
days) and insisted that this was good music. Okay, we put them on. The
moment that Elvis began to sing, Chim-Chim went beserk! He jumped up
from his cushion and began to screech, and run around yelling all over
the room! We shut off the music and he calmed down. We turned the
music back on and the cat went nuts again.

My pal never mentioned Elvis again. Cats are soooo cool.
______________

Yesterday I decided to listen to Beethoven's violin concerto, which I
just happened not to have heard for a while. As soon as the violin
began (Isaac Stern!) my big orange buddy "RJ" jumped up on the table
and sat listening carefully. The music wasn't loud (cats don't like
loud music of any type) but I could see that RJ was carefully
listening to Isaac play his Strad. I guess that's his new favorite CD.
__________________

I sing classical baritone, and when I'm practicing my scales or
rehearsing an operatic aria, RJ would always "help" by offering
criticism. He usually does not like my singing scales or exercises,
and he leaves the room. But when I'm singing an aria or other piece,
he'll come back and listen. He however does not criticize me unduly,
being kind.

He loves Mozart, of course. All cats do. Let's face it -- all creation
loves Mozart! He seems to prefer orchestral music over operatic.
Because of my opera work I do listen to a lot of operas and RJ is very
tolerant. If it's classical and not too loud, he does not complain. He
does NOT like Rock & Roll.

The only time I've seen Felix express any opinion on that subject was
when he requested that I play the video for "Cats" [I did play it for
him, of course, since he had gone to some trouble to make it clear to
me that he wanted me to].

Ava sometimes dances along with music being played. :-)

Mine animules don't seem to have a music preference, and I have broad
tastes, heh.  But, sometimes I too dance with music and my cats usually
pick up on that as an opportune time to play - mock fright running off
with tails up! Norm

Isn't that funny when they do that?  My little Mimi was a great one
for mock-frightened or mock-tough-gal play. ;)

My blessed Vanilla (love of my life and now RB) would sing along with
my vocalizations and also dance to Mozart.

Afraid I can't match your great stories about the cats and music.
My son and I listen mostly to opera.  In the classical vein, he likes
Baroque, I like Romance.  The cats listen along, without comment or
reaction.   On the other hand, my older son prefers Rock (the worse,
the better, IMO) - the cats leave the room and he has been reduced to
listening only with earphones!

I am a soprano, although I haven't taken lessons in a good many years.
While I was actively studying voice, my teacher would  borrow friend's
houses in the city for teaching purposes after she moved away from SF.  Her
host on the days I took my lessons had two cats, and the boss cat was a big
Siamese named Colonel.  Colonel supervised my lessons until I started doing
exercises in the high registers. Colonel liked lower voices better, I guess,
because when I climed the scale to high C, he started growling and finally
bit the other cat. =o) At least Colonel didn't bite ME. Finally, we had to
shut Colonel in the kitchen when I came, which didn't go down well with him
at all. EVERYONE's a critic.  My teacher said he liked the baritone whose
lesson was before mine just fine.  When I finally met Colonel's human, he
laughed and said Colonel liked LOW notes.

My three cats get to hear whatever I want to listen to, which is mostly
classical, some Italian Opera, and some Celtic and some Latin music, some Yo
Yo Ma CD's and the soundtracks to all three of the LOTR movies. I tend to
listen to a cluster of favorite CD's, which gradually changes, whenever I
find something I haven't listened to in a while, and it becomes a new
favorite.I haven't noticed they react differently from CD to CD.
Fortunately, they never are subjected to Fat Elvis in Las Vegas. =o)

Interesting you mentioned the range. I'm essentially a bass-baritone
and so I have a wide tessitura. My low is a low-E and my high is a
nice solid G-sharp above middle C, and about half the time I can sing
an A-natural or even a B-flat above middle C.

My cats never liked the high notes, and preferred the low ones. But my
baritone arias usually have that big "G" or "A" finale, which makes my
"RJ" leave the room. RJ prefers Bryn Terfel to Placido Domingo and
doesn't like Pavarotti at all. So he has great taste!

Me too.
Although Stinky and I prefer Domingo to Pavarotti, where tenors are
concerned, which is good.
We LOVE Bryn Terfel.

Did you know the "Upside-Downy Head" song can also be sung to "Di
Provenza?"

"Upside Downy Downy Head,
Upside Downy Downy Head"
etc.

Know any tenor jokes? ;)

"Know any tenor jokes?"

Aren't they all? ha ha

Mmmm...
"How do you know what a tenor's thinking?"
"Shine a flashlight in his ear and see what shines out the other
side."

One day we all sat around during rehearsals and made up obscene fake
names that were puns for opera names. Great fun. Silly.

Someone gave me that Christmas CD "Jingle Cats." It's christmas music made up
of cats meowing. When the kittens started "singing," my cat Boots ran and hid.
Now Boots was never afraid of anything, but he sure was afraid of those
kittens. My other kitty Mimi on the other hand would get real close to the
speakers with a worried look on her face. She'd try to find the kittens. I
turned it off because it seemed to stress them.

My husband plays guitar and sings. When he sings easy going songs on acoustic,
the cats are o kay. When he sings harder rock on his electric guitar, they are
nowhere to be seen. They also don't like it when he plays or sings loud.

I think Felix and Sammy must have been sharing notes! None of my group
seem to care about the Jingle Cats, but Sammy seems determined to find
the intruder cats. I think he's looking for new playmates :)

Personally, I love the Jingle Cats! I'm going to have to copy the CD
onto tape to bring in the truck with me. Christmas just isn't Christmas
without the Jingle Cats!

I enjoy the Jingle Cats... now and then.  It doesn't seem to bother the
cats, but  I played that tape for a friend of mine one December when she was
eight months and about three and a half weeks pregnant.  She gave me a LOOK
after the first carol and said  "Take that off. NOW."  I complied, as I like
being alive just fine. =o) And a woman in that state deserves to be humored
now and then.

I don't know what she was worried about.  The baby was too far along
to suddenly  turn into kittens. ;)

BTW, my mother always reminds me that she saw "Psycho" while she was

My Baby Eyes will sing right along with the "Meowy Christmas" CD. Tommy does
what Mimi does. The others come running when that CD starts, too. It seems
to excite them. I haven't tried it since Billy & Lily got here but I have
a feeling they're going to go ga-ga over it judging from how they reacted
to the meowing of the virtual kitty in the pet-the-kitty SWF site that
someone posted here the other day.

Eddy the kitten hasn't expressed much preference yet, though we've
only had him around for a month or so. He does look vaguely odd at me
if I sing.

When Maggie moved in with me eight years ago (vet said she was 3-5
years old at the time), I would sing Jewel's "You were meant for me"
song. She seemed to like it. One day it came on the radio. She hoped
in a chair next to the radio, looked at the radio, then gave me a
contented look.

Celtic music, though, is her favorite. I've seen her wag her tail in
time with bagpipes and Celtic drums. We put on "Riverdance," and she
comes in and watches attentively, her tail again moving in time with
the music. She hasn't asked for hard shoes yet...

While we haven't had Brandy long enought to discern her tastes, it's clear
that our Stosh is a rocker. He's mostly into the older progressive rock
like Yes and Genesis. Roxie, it would just figure, likes New Agey stuff,
but this is surely because she's a quiet, meditative type. All seem to
like classical: in particular Mozart, Sibelius, Ravel, Chopin, Mussorgsky.

My Fritzie (RB) was a nut for Liberace and the music from original Star
Trek. He loathed Queen. He'd go bats the minute Freddie Mercury started
singing: tearing around the house, muttering cusswords at the CD player,
swatting at me. He could only tolerate covers of Queen by the Royal
Philharmonic.

Blessed be,
Baha

This is downrigh cruel! :) Are you trying to kill me??? If I ever heard
that, I think I would kill myself. (But then I'd end up in Hell, where
I would probably be forced to listen to Queen and the Chipmunks for
all eternity!)

My ginger cat, Jessie Baker (RB) used to go nuts when we whistled the
old Andy Griffith tune.  He'd flop down on the floor, and pull himself
around in circles.  He'd just dang near turn inside out.  Our little
blue and white parakeet, Bad Bob liked that tune also.  Liked it until
Jessie Baker ate him :(

We came home one evening after a short visit at a friends, and the
kitchen was a disaster.  Bob wasn't in his cage, seed shells all over
the place, and about 4 or 5 little blue feathers on the floor under
the table.  I cried out "Oh no!  Where's Bad Bob?"  At which point
Jessie Baker casually walks past me and says "Oh, Bob wasn't bad at
all".

For a home that houses so much music of so many different styles, Jasper
and Carrie don't seem to have developed any preferences.

However, a cat I had when I was young, Purdey (long since RB) showed a
distinct liking for David Soul.  Yes, he of Starsky and Hutch fame.
When I was about 11, he was having a reasonably successful music career
in the UK, including a No 1 single, "Don't Give Up On Us Baby".

When the video was played, Purdey would watch it intently, sitting right
in front of the TV and craning his neck up at the screen   He showed no
interest in anything else.

Thomasina loathes Abba. I had her in the car one day, and she is
normally a very good, and very quiet traveller. Until Abba came onto the
car radio. She howled her lungs out in protest. When the song ended, she
stopped. My cats have tatse ;o)

Brenna's taste for car music (assuming that one *must* go in the nasty
metalmonster) seems to be 1940s and 1950s music - especially Glenn
Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, and such.  But not Dean Martin.
She howls at Dean Martin.  So far, only Dean Martin.  And rock music.
She also likes Enya, but not as much as the other stuff.

Cult, The Irish Rovers, Tannahill Weavers, medieval music, and Wierd Al

I've never had a cat who reacted particularly to music; however, I
usually listen on a Walkman CD player.  My RB Mike didn't like the
Walkman; I never knew if it was because he could hear the music and
didn't like it, or didn't like my being distracted from focusing on
him.  Tallulah hasn't reacted to the Walkman, but Hubert apparently
doesn't like it; he chewed through the cord to the headphones.

That just sounds like a kitten's normal reaction to cords. ;-)
