Oscar likes ... cheddar?

Monique Y. Mudama - 19 Apr 2006 15:24 GMT Last night I had a bit of shredded cheddar. It was extremely sharp, pungent cheddar, the kind that typically you have to cut with some other flavor, like apples or crackers, to balance the taste.
I sat down to eat it and Oscar jumped right up, her nose practically touching the container. I gave her a little tiny bit of a sliver, sure she would ignore it. But no, she ate it. And another one.
Full of surprises, she is.

Smokey is a Cheddar fanatic, the sharper the better. She even has her brand preferences. But then Smokey will only eat ONE kind of dry food and doesn't like it when we change to a new bag. (It's not the same you know). She detests Feta, hates Swiss, but likes Parmesan and used to eat Blue.
The other cats think she's crazy, although Cleo likes cream.
Karen - 19 Apr 2006 16:25 GMT The cats would all gather around my father for cheddar everynight. He'd sit in his chair sharing cheese with 5 or so cats.

Duke McAdow - 19 Apr 2006 17:40 GMT This is interesting to hear! I thought it was just a quirk with one of my cats. Lily is like Bill's Smokey...she eats her dry food almost exclusively (won't go near canned), but the exception is sharp cheddar cheese! I wonder what it is about cheddar that our cats seem to like?
She hates Swiss, too...she also turns her nose up at any "process cheese food" products, or the cheaper cheddar brands (they're kinda rubbery).

I wonder what it is about cheddar that our cats seem to like? Smokey is a real people food cat, doesn't really like dry cat food. But she will eat the one variety of dry cat food if she must, Whiskas (MCDonalds) of course.

Enfilade - 20 Apr 2006 15:02 GMT I remember once that the nature of a cat's taste buds is such that they like things with strong, sharp, pungent odours. This is why fish is a hit and it also makes sense they would like sharp cheddar. Mozarella, not being nearly as strong, is probably less flavourful to them.
Smokey-poke has learned the delights of cheez whiz.

They were *all over it*! Scrambling about like little rats, trying to get every last little bit. I never saw a cat go so crazy over cheese before.

jmcquown - 20 Apr 2006 04:15 GMT > Last night I had a bit of shredded cheddar. Persia snags Cheese-Its crackers out of my hand whenever possible. She adores Cheese-Its. Must be the cheddar and combined with the crunch is like "oooh, crunchy kibble with cheese!" I only give her a tiny piece of one cracker, about 1/4 of a cracker. She's right back there, asking for more.
This is the same cat who loves milk. I cannot take the yellow half-gallon jug of milk out of fridge without her running to the small plastic bowl I have by her food dish. She starts this meezer voice yelling; she wants some MILK! Nothing else will do. :) At least it doesn't upset her stomach. I've never had to buy special cat milk. I only give her a dribble of it, anyway. Just to get her to shut up!

Cantate - 20 Apr 2006 05:46 GMT Cherry eats any kind of cheese, yoghurt, pudding, but not milk. Chibi loves crabsticks. Emma likes to lick the butter knife-- we say, "Lollipop, Emma!" and she puts her paw around it like a lollipop on a stick! Jona mainly eats the cheap dry catfood that I keep around if they're hungry during the day, and prefers it to anything else. Romeo (the new outside boy) is still eating anything I'll give him.

My dog Puma would eat anything he saw a human eat ... including the hot peppers from our sandwiches! Crazy dog.

Thye german shepherd we had when I was a kid was a bit like that, he hated brussel sprouts but if we put one in his dish, then pretended we were going to eat it, he ate it, but the look on his face you'd think he was eating a lemon.

We had a dog in Thailand; he was a G-shep mix. Supposed to be a guard dog (yeah, right!) We had a fishpond underneath the stone steps going up to the 3rd floor balcony. It had goldfish in it. I can't tell you how many fish Kamoi (the name means 'thief' in Thai) waded in and ate. But there was a natural pond out front with a walking catfish. It came out when it was pouring down rain and walked around on the shore by the pond. I saw it! It used to tease the dog like mad when it was barking at it while it was in the water. It even nipped him on the nose!
I have no idea what happened to Kamoi or to the walking catfish; we left Bangkok in 1971. I like to think the dog went to a good home and the catfish went on to walk along the mud in the monsoon rains for many more years.

I've never heard of a dog eating fish like that.

mlabofski@yahoo.co.uk - 21 Apr 2006 18:58 GMT Otis likes cheddar, but also cream cheese (especially Philadelphia) which he will lick off the end of my finger very delicately (that's the only amount he's allowed).
